View Full Version : Unintended license plate meaning

Back in January, we replaced my wife's GMC Envoy (amazing the damage a semi can do to a car even at slow speeds) with a Ford Explorer. When I was filling out the paperwork for the purchase, I also applied for new personalized plates for her. Once I wrote down the letters, I realized that what she wanted could be easily misread as a misspelling of a character's name from The Lord of the Rings. Not wanting my wife to be constantly thought of as an undereducated LOTR freak (apologies to LOTR fans -- I'm reading The Hobbit to my son at bedtimes), I called her to make some changes to it.
Today, I saw a personalized plate that I've seen many times before. The plate is LVSWMN. I had always translated it as 'loves women' and, since there was a woman driving, I figured it was some sort of lesbian statement. But when I saw it today, there was a little piece of black tape affixed to the plate so that it read LV-SWMN. I now translate it to read 'love swimming'. Talk about a change in meaning. Obviously I wasn't the only one misunderstanding the plate.
Since so many states are offering personlized plate options, I have to imagine that this sort of thing happens all the time. Anyone else seen any?

LOL!!!!!!!
My friend and I were bored one day driving somewhere so we started watching for plates.
one said bnfshn. so obviously Been Fishin
the next one said AA4WHL.........does that mean..AA for awhile?
Like Been in "AA" for awhile? if it didn't mean that, that's what it meant that day. Started quite a giggling spat, and few more comments redneck style. Like, "its aaite buddy, I's in AA 4 while too" and some other stupid ****.
In all reality, it probably meant AA 4wheel? like Someone's initial's and 4wheel drive? ...I like my interpretation better.

When my wife and I bought a new car a couple of years ago we decided to proudly display our love of Bobby Darrin and our favorite song "Beyond the Sea" on the plate...so, we filled out the form and sent it in.
The plate we requested read BYNDTHC.
Oops.
Once we realized our "mistake" we quickly changed it.

This is a neat web-site that shows the license plates that are "banned" from certain states! Funny to read some of them...

AA4WHL is a Ham Radio license plate. Ham radio operators often times put their call signs on their license plates so other "Hams" can call them up.
Please disregard. Trying to post pix but the system won't accept. Sorry.

I had a 1969 Camaro that I did a complete restoration on that I built a 1967 Corvette 427 motor for. On the dyno it was putting out 648 H.P. and I had vanity plates that said BAD-RAT

Family friend owned a Porsche with plates reading "I DID IT." I guess he was pulled over once and the cop just said "nice license plate" and let him go. :D

My old roomate had one on his Stang and it was similar, like '427hp' or something.

Beyond THC.
I understand the "Beyond the sea", but is there a significance to the initials "THC" that I am missing? I really should check this board in the daytime when I am awake/alert :)

Strange, the first thing I thought of was "Bind THC," like into bales for shipping and distribution. Beyond THC works too, I guess.
