Hi, proud member of the Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums here. Our band is travelling down to Savannah for the St. Patrick's Day Parade and was wondering what to expect. Anyone from down that way give us the scoop on where the cop friendly places are to hang out? I was stationed down that way in the service about 15 yrs ago but I bet the city has changed.
Thanks!

I heard that except for NY/Chicago/Boston, it's supposed to be one of the biggest celebrations around, not to mention a helluva lot warmer. I was there for New Years a few years ago and the owner of "Kevin Barry's Pub" said to make reservations early....enjoy yourself, don't fall in the river, & cheers

The years I was there, NYPDs band always came down too. Definitly make your hotel reservations early if you have to pay for it, it gets extremely expensive there. Kevin Barrys is down on river street, great place for cops to hang out during SPD weekend. I imagine they'll cordon off river street again for foot traffic only again. That helped out with the crowds. in 2003, the crowds were estimated around 500k if i recall, and I know we did alot of courtesty transports for brother and sister officers. Expect cab fare to be very expensive also. If you get turned down for a ride if you ask an officer, dont be too mad about it, its the busiest time of the year for us. I usually worked 20+ hour days during that weekend so tempers are high. Wearing your uniform out on town is ok too, you wont be bothered by the local thugs. Stay out of the housing projects too, street robberies go way up around that time with tourists going where they arent supposed too. Theres 3 projects that border the downtown area, so stay between MLK Blvd and E. Broad ST. Dont walk in the alleys either. You'll have alot of fun, just keep your wits about you :)

Thanks for the heads up, and I may have a few more questions as the date draws nearer. Sounds like a great time. I know we are scheduled to perform at the Savannah PD Emerald Society event tues night and try to gat a few pub crawls in.

As far as a Band CD, it is in the works still but should be availible soon enough.

We're back, and had a great time! Marching up and down River Street to the cheering crowd was quite memorable. The weather could have been better but it did little to dappen the spirits of the Parade attendees.
Can't wait to go back!
