I am looking to go through the hiring process for LE in Washington later this year (one of my resolutions for 2005 is to start the process). I'm on a great workout plan that's getting me ready to not only scrape by the PAT, but excel in it hopefully. I have talked to my friends who are officers, and they are all telling me that I would be a great officer, one even going so far as to tell me that from what he can see in me (he's on a llot of oral boards, and is a FTO), it's what I'm meant for, and I believe that too. They have offered to be references, and I have also talked at length with the president of a city council and the mayor of one city (personal friends) who backs me as well.

There are a few things that I am looking at in myself that I am unsure about. I know that departments will lok past certain things, and nail you on others. I also know that if you don't pass the first round of testing, you learn some of your strengths and weaknesses, and reapply as a refined person.

I was a somewhat typical dumb kid (I'm 22 now) who made some poor decisions growing up. From ages 15-17 I was homeless, kicked out of my mother's home due to her drug use and abusive boyfriend, and lived in emergency and long-term youth shelters throughout high school. At that time I held a full time job, and soon the job took over, and I dropped out of HS. Surprisingly, was not the typical drugged out street kid while I was in the shelter. I tried speed once, and used marijuana twice. I learned early on that I don't like my senses impaired or my mind 'not right.'

I care about education very much, and went back to get my GED (scored top 5% in all areas--yippee). The thing is I just can't afford college right now...I have applied for financial aid and was denied because I'm under 25 and require a parent's signature, but she wouldn't give one. She passed away last year, and they won't take "I have never known my father" for an answer. I'm in the process of saving money, but in the past year that's been difficult (with the mother passing away and with a huge fire at my old apartment building--I wasn't insured so my credit is basically ruined now).

For my credit issues, I have entered a debt management plan, and am making regular payments. I've been told by recruiters that this won't affect my BI due to the circumstances and my willingness to fix the mess.

Another thing: I also manage a web site for an adult company right now, and have been present during shoots. I help out with other areas of the business: interviewing, recruiting, etc. I don't use my real name in the business, and am very scrutinizing of the business' legal documents, making sure that everything is in order.

Will this affect my LE applications? I've asked a few officers I know, and they say it depends on the agency, but in general it shouldn't.

Well I must say, you are the first I have heard of this for any applicant! So, I myself do not really know if it would affect you or not. I mean if it's a legit business, whic from what you are talking about, seems to be that way or I am sure the Feds or somebody would have shut you down already. Now when you do apply and you said you do not use your real name for the business, you will have to explain your alias name, etc. Since it is a business also, I mean if nothing illegal is being down, then all your BI will have to do is chekc references out of who you work with and "maybe get a date with them", of course if they are females? Bad joke I know. Anyway, I know some departments in Wa. do require some college, so you do need to look into that to see if you qualify. As far as everything else, you should be ok. Keep us updated though, I would love to hear how a BI would handle this situation.

As long as your business doesn't operate illegally or support child porn, etc, I doubt this would be an issue. I know cops who have had affiliations with adult entertainment before becoming cops. My employer would make you resign before offering you a job, however.

I woudn't want to try to have both jobs. LE is my goal, something that means a lot to me, and the other gig is what's helping supplement my income right now. I don't have the greatest job in the world, and it barely pays things, but the adult site is helping me pay my debt off and hopefully save for college down the road, or for a car.

Wow, your work exprience sure sounds a hell of a lot more exciting than those of us who flipped burgers while in our teens. :D

As stated earlier your best bet would be to direct your questions to the agency you are applying. Keep in mind that at 22, you have plenty of time to continue building a steady work and credit history.

Good luck.

I currently work in college admissions/financial aid and there are ways around the "never knowing father thing." Now each school is different but I know that with our school you can get around it by having a few of the right people wright some letters. If you have a person that runs the shelter/home, a family member, a counselor from your last school, your employer, and yourself all write letters explaining why you are an independant student you can get around it. There is no way to leagally declare yourself as independant but it is the school's choice to treat you as one or not. So talk to the FA office about anything that you can do like this and if they can't help you look at the next school down the street. PM me if you need some ideas or help...this is the crap I do everyday until the PD passes their new budgets!!

FYI- the speed may DQ you from a lot of places. I don't see any other big issues though. Some may wait on you until you get your credit in line. You'd also have to find agencies that don't require college but the speed is the biggest hurdle. Seems like you got yourself straightened out so good luck.

Haha, actually, yes there is. :-) Most of it's centered around the photo shoot though (hene the extra bedroom in my apartment).

About the speed...I know that a lot of departments have an "X clause," meaning that if you've done it under X amount of times, or outside of X amount of years it shouldn't DQ me, but the fact that I'm so young makes that hard to get over. I just don't want something that I did years ago to affect this.

You're 22 and you want to start the process this year. We didn't realize (at least I didn't) that you are filming in your own house. I recommend a change of vocation, and the sooner the better.

Being employed by someone else allows you plausible deniability. Being the "Head Cheese," :D as it were, denies you that option.

FWIW my 2

Well technically I don't 'film' in my own place...I do some interviews and when I do them I take profile shots for their file, but yes, I get what you mean.
