I'm currently employed with a LE agency, and am applying for many others. I have a detailed past with use of steriods. I got caught up in the hype that in order to be a good collegiate football player you had to use them. I have not used or been exposed to them for 2-3 years. My question is, am I considered DQ'd or do I have to wait for time to pass until my past is in the way past?

How did you even get hired where you are at now or did you not disclose to them your past use? It all depends on the departments policies you are applying with, etc. If past usage is an automatic DQ. then obviously you can not get hired. However you say it's been 2-3 yrs, how long have you been in LE? I am just confused as to how you get hired somewhere and used steroids.

reply to irishlad- my department is a small town agency. No questions were ever asked. I did take a drug screening and background. I quess you can say I feel ashamed for what I did. I was playing Division I college football. I love my job, I feel I'm good at my job. I've been there for 6mo. I just wander if I should stay for a couple more years to allow my past to get way behind me. I've taken other LE tests and have disclosed everything, just didn't get the offer. I just want to know how other agencies will view my past. any help

I would stay where you are at, however getting turned down by the other agencies could have been because of the usage? But at the same time, of no questions were asked at your current department, then that really puts my doubts into why you are in LE. but thats my opinion. I would stay where you are at because if you attempt to apply elsewhere as you have stated, your past is still with you and the grass is not always greener on the other side. And also, another reason as to why you are not getting picked up elsewhere is you only have 6 months on the job. That not much time in. Most agencies I know that accept laterals, want at least 1-2 yrs experience.
