Teagate - police to be investigated for accepting free cuppas on duty Jan 28 2005

Daily Post

A POLICE force is investigating its officers for accepting free cuppas while on duty.

Cheshire Constabulary launched an internal investigation after a number of officers were said to be enjoying complimentary teas and coffees at motorway service station near Chester.

They are reportedly accused of breaking force rules over hospitality, gifts and favours.

Regulations state that all gifts must be logged in a register.

A force spokesman said an investigation was under way, but was unable to confirm reports that 15 officers were involved.

He said: "he investigation is at an early stage and no officers have been suspended."

The investigation was criticised by Norman Brennan, a police officer who also heads the Victims of Crime Trust pressure group. He said: "Tens of thousands of police officers, including myself, have had free cups of tea from cafes or restaurants. It has been going on since Dixon of Dock Green.

"It is good community policing. It shows the public that police officers are human beings, who enjoy a cup of tea on a cold morning like everyone else. It provides a reassuring, visible presence."

Where do you draw the line?
Turn down a cuppa when you're at sombodys house?
Being given a coffee is hardly the same as taking a bribe or running a protection racket.
I think this going too far. Officers are actually facing a disciplinary investigation over this.

That's crap.

We can accept a minor thing like a cup of coffee or a discounted meal, as long as there is no expectation of preferred treatment as a result.

The strange thing is our force as far as I am aware are still encouraging officers to take their refreshment breaks in the community. It makes me wonder if there isn't more to this than stated in the report?

One of the fast food chains in the US had booths marked off for officers (usually near the back wall). Before cell phones, they had a phone in the booth, so officers could make calls and do paperwork. They felt it reduced crime at the chain, since the officer were always 'stopping in'.

If you could be bought for a 'cuppa', you are a crook to start with.

We have McDonalds down here for police officers only, equipped with phones, special bright lights so you can see better. They marked Police Officers Only, made more like a large desk so you can eat and write your reports. They write the meal off on there taxes as security.

There will probably be a Detective Inspector, a Detective Sergeant + several DC's conducting this investigation; while Mrs Jones the victim of an Aggravated Burglary awaits the arrival of Probationary Constable Smith.
