I'm currently processing with a PD. Over 4 years ago I contemplated taking steroids. A friend recommended someone he knew who could get me steroids. In this situation I had to provide the dealer the money first (I know...stupid). I sent the money and waited. Long story short. I did not receive the steroids and was reimbursed the money.
I contacted the PD I applied to (anonymously) and the BI stated it was not disqualifying as long as I never used steroids (never used them/stopped playing football that semester). Though she did mention I should mention this at the polygraph so that I don't show deception. If its not a DQ, should I still mention it?
Side note...beside this incident, I never purchased/used/possessed any illegal substance.

You bet you better tell them...Also they will ask you questions related to purchasing, dealing, etc...so either way you will have to talk about it. Also they may ask for names, etc..meaning the BI might. But be honest and everything should be ok, if you did not ever use them. Good luck.

i would not mention it. if you didn't actually get them and you got your money back, then i say you never purchased them. you're not lying, your just not giving anymore info then they actually ask for.

then you spike, then you fail. BAD advice. especially since it's CLEARLY on his mind now, so you'd better believe it will be when they ask him the questions about it on the poly and he doesn't mention it.
irishlad is spot on.

Not mention it??? WTF? I am sorry but they will ask him questions concerning "have you ever done any undetected crimes" meaning, even if he did not actually get the steroids, he still attempted too...thanx bb007d:)

I spoke with the BI again today. They now want me to augment my application and issue a memo detailing the incident. This agency is the first that I applied to. I'm afraid of issuing a statement and then being DQ. The BI still says that any decision made will be made by command staff after the process has been completed. Is this that big of a blemish? After all two law enforcment agencices 1 federal and 1 county did not make this an issue. Should I withdraw my application. I would hate to waste my time if they are going to weigh this heavily. Besides this incident, my personal history is impeccable. What do you guys think?

You should become familiar with criminal law before you make another incorrect statement like that.

my courts here in ohio would never indict on that, and i find it hard to believe that yours would.

Bro, just be honest, and do what they want you to... Its gonna look bad regaurdless... "well I was gonna buy some crack, I gave this dude the money, but they were out of crack, so I got my money back..."
I know thats a little out of content, but its still on the same street.
Dont withdraw your app, it'l make you look quilty, like your hiding something... Even if you dont get hired on, take it as a learning experiance. We've all done something stupid in our past... Nobody here is perfect, and the PD knows that. Remember if they're doing your background, and spending the money for your poly, then your already 1 step in. Just write whatever they want, cover your ***, and pass your poly...
Good luck to ya, and let us know what happens.

No one is perfect, so just admit it. Don't act ashamed. What they want is honesty, not perfection. Anyone who has never made mistakes is not capable of using any discretion in making decsions in the field. Just my opinion. Also keep in mind that some depts will use the poly to weed out those they just don't want and can't find any other reason to dismiss them. You'll do fine.
