I am wondering exactly how important is a college degree in law enforcement jobs?? Would it boost the chances of getting hired, especially in those jobs that only require a HS degree?

Yes, it will boost your chances of getting hired in LE and also with most civilian employers.

The day is coming when college degrees will be the norm in law enforcement. At my agency, you must have either a degree, military experience, or prior LE experience to even be considered. Regardless of prior experience, you won't be promoted unless you have a degree.

If you don't have military experience, then a college degree or at least 60 credits is essential! I don't know of any departments that will hire someone with only a HS diploma. Plus, promotional opportunities are almost, if not, completley impossible without a college background.

That is not entirely true. Most PD applicants nowadays do have a Degree but one is not required for appointment (in MA). Such a requirement for entry level police officers would probably negatively impact affirmative action hires which BTW, would be reason enough for me to support it.

I do agree that it is essential for promotional consideration.

Well I am getting a 4yr degree anyways....cause I figure most departments wont hire you until you're at least 21, and by the time I am done with college I'll be 22.

Having a degree isnt going to make better cops, but it will change the perception the public takes on the business. My 2 cents.

Having a degree isn't required as the thread was first started as. Most big time depts. either require at least 60 college credits, which is only an Associates Degree and or 2 yrs. Military.

- I finished my degree after getting in LE since I was in college at the time I was hired. We do not need it for promotions, but some depts around me use it for promotions to Brass positions, etc...

-As far as the public viewing it...how would they know if you have a degree or not? I mean its not like when you are in court they give your bio...just my .02 also:)

I think the way you are looking at it Soon2Becop is a good way and seems you have a goos head on your shoulders as opposes to other asking questions in here. Good luck.
