Anyone take the Int'l Association of Chiefs of Police sergeant test?

The guys at the PD who've already made rank have told me that taking the $3000 'study group' where you get all the test answers is well worth the money. Of course, this money would have to be spent right around Christmas as well...

Well, I have a problem with that. I have a real problem dishing out $3k for anything, let alone throwing it away on an unknown outcome. The single guys at my dept, one of which is one of the boys and a real ***** to boot, can afford this without any problem. So now I'm face with a dilemma, do I take the hit and drop the $3k for a shot at making sergeant, or do I trust my own skills at studying and comprehending the 7 or so books that are on the test list?

This whole testing procedure is ridiculous. I wish there were a better way.

Bank the $3000 and study. Look at it this way: How long does it take you to make $3000? If you studied for that amount of time, you'd probably "ace" the test.

all in all that could be true on both counts if the promotional
test was fair and square, being in a time of political correctness,

blacks, women, hispanic's, gay's, imports' that are now us citizens
have the upper hand, if your a w/m non-threatening yes man
they may find a slot for you.

Sounds like the good ole' civil service tests from NJ. You dish out the cash for the course and they give you the answers. If I remember right, there's even a list of "definitions" that they give you for words that aren't even in the dictionary, and if you don't take the course you miss all of the definition questions. I knew a guy in NJ that shelled out the cash for the test and got a 98%. Without the course he would have scored around 90% like everyone else. I think it's a crappy system, but you're pretty much guaranteed to score higher if you take the course. Good luck.

I believe a majority of the department would like to see this written test changed. It has been suggested that an outside agency make up a test based upon AG guidelines and dept. SOPs.

I'm all for this type of test. There won't be any 'study group' to get all the answers from, and we'll all be starting on a level playing field.

This may sound good, but of course there's a catch. The township manager- aka police director- wants his evaluation to count towards a significant portion of the final score. Unfortuantely, there's not a damn thing we can do about that, except boycott the test entirely (yeah right.) As it stands now, his evaluation is worth 33% of the total test score. That works out well for the *** kissers and people that work during daylight hours, but what about everyone else?
