I'm looking for any police departments outside the Boston, MA area that may be hiring - which are not civil service.
I've been employed as a police officer in Wilmington, DE since 1998 and was a probation officer before that. My wife's job is transferring her to MA within the next month. I would prefer to obatin a job before they decide to give the next civil service test.
Thanks for any information...

I hate to say it, but people that grew up and lived in MA their whole lives, leave to go to other states because it is SO HARD to get hired in MA. Unless you're a vet. and get a perfect score on the civil service exam...it's hard. Depending where in MA your wife is getting transferred see if there is a border close and get hired in a town on the border in a different state (a few places will let you live out of state...specifically like Enfield, CT or even probably Nashua, NH).

Good Luck.

I'm from Mass, and I'm trying to go to the NYPD. Boston, as you may have already figured out, is damn near impossible, and many of the towns have a residents preference or other mechanisms. As recently as a couple months ago, the Easton police department was hiring. It's a nice town, pretty affluent and crime-free, but slow. Their number is 508-230-3322. They also have a website.

The Amherst (central Mass, college town) PD is non civil-service, but I have no idea if they're hiring. If you think you could do corrections, the Suffolk Vounty sherrif's office is probably hiring. It's supposed to pay well.

Good luck, you're probably going to need it.

I am not sure where you are going to live, but the others are right. There is a residency requirement within the civil service system, and the non-civil service towns are almost as restrictive since the local politicians control a lot of hiring. You need to contact a town that may be hiring and they will seek a waiver of training from the Massachusetts Police Training Committee:

http://www.mass.gov/mptc/

If you are a veteran, you will get veterans preference in the civil service system, but that will only put you to the top of the residents list.

To be a resident, you have to live in the town for one year prior to the test.

If you are going to live somewhere north of Boston, you can look at New Hampshire. They tend to hire more quickly and more regularly.

Go to this web site regarding civil service:

With out residence/vet status good luck I know of alot of people with very high scores who had a hard time finding work myself included. But another option may be to look into campus police UMASS LOWELL works closely with Lowell p.d as do many other universitys . Another option is railroad p.d I know of a few guys who transfered there from smaller towns. Best of luck

While you are trying for a town you can try the bigger University PD's. I know a Patrolman on Harvard Univ PD who is making close to a grand a week base pay. They are a big department that also get tons of paid details. BU, BC and Northeastern are also worth checking into.

I know Chatam and Mashpee PD's in Cape Cod are non civil service and have hired academy trained (non residents) recently.

As far as the non civil service departments hiring you can check the Job File on the (MA) NCIC/LEAPS.

The Massachusetts Dept of Personnel Admin also has a list of all non-civil service departments in the state.

Good luck.

Good luck is right... Boston University Police is hiring. I live in Holbrook, MA and if Nashua, NH don't work out i have a good shot at getting on here. Small town but 1/2 the dept is putting in for transfers b/c of the low starting pay, approx $39k/year. Not many vets either.. i was 6th on the list a few years ago and i'm not a vet. I interviewed with the Cheif of Nashua, NH and from what i understand they do not like to hire laterals.

Cities in CT hire regularly...in MA, civil service or not, most towns you may have to be Auxillary or Reserves first. It's supply and demand. 20,000 plus take the civil service exam every 2 years.
