Does anyone know the process to get on the motor carrier enforcement agency in Ohio. I know the Highway patrol, runs the program. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that works for them and can help me out.
As a former truck driver and a current LEO, I have had the oppurtunity to find out how. It is the same in most states. First you need to apply to the Ohio State Police.
After you get throught the academy, then you can begin to request assignment to the Motor Carrier Enforcement Division. Just remember your assignment will depend on the needs of the state not what you desire.
It may take some time, but don't give up if that's what you want to do

I don't know anything about Ohio, but here in WI motor carrier enforcement officers are part of the State Patrol. The WSP has two positions, Troopers and Inspectors. Troopers are responsible for traffic enforcement and Inspectors with motor carrier enforcement, though both are certified law enforcement officers, are armed and can take enforcement action. All state patrol cadets attend the same 28-week basic academy. After the academy, they choose their preference for what they want to do. The number of Troopers is actually limited by the state constitution (about 300, I think), but Inspector positions are not. Therefore, there are more Inspector positions available. The general rule of thumb is that, if you want to be a Trooper from the get-go, you're going to end up patrolling the backwoods of northern Wisconsin for some time before you get a better posting. If you're tied to a certain area, you choose Inspector because chances are better you'll get posted where you want. Once the cadet receives a posting, he or she will attend field training in that specific area before being cut loose.
