I recently bought the ARCO book. I have read every chapter and done 2 of the 5 tests. My average grade is a 94%. I work out 5 days a week, mainly upperbody work, I have little arms, as well as endurance training. My current mile is 11m, I would like to make it better, but one thing at a time! LOL I have submitted all my paperwork, and am awaiting my test date. I know several LEOs (from the gym) including a Leuitenant, and they have all shared with me helpful information. I've read most every post on the boards and just had one question. I saw where alot of people were submitted to a poly test, I have no problem with this, but on all of my current info, my department doesn't require one. Is this not a mandate? Is it at the discretion of the department? I'm trying to learn as much as possible about everything and anything that I might or will be asked to do, submit etc. and this is the only one I haven't answered LOL
Thanks!

Every department is different, so yes, while a lot of places require a poly, a lot do not.
As far as the Arco book is concerned, I felt it could help and hurt you. Basically, I used it to get the general feel of how the tests were organized and structured.
I got the best advice and help from the testing workshop the department I applied to offered. They gave us a mock video test just like the real test had and also they gave us a take home study packet that included a practice test that was just like the real one. You need to find out(if you can) what exactly the test is about, it will give you a huge advantage. Tests can vary quite a lot from department to department.

Try to find some books on police interviewing as here in California the interview is the main stumbling block besides backgrounds.

pkagel, do you know of some good books on interviewing, or any for that matter? I can't find anything on the oral boards, except for the 5-10 pages in the testing books which isn't much help, it's pretty general stuff for any kind of job interview.

I had one called tales from a hardass or something to that effect. Just start google searching and you should find something.
