Hey, I am 27 years old and have 3 years service as a police officer serving in Scotland. For sometime now i have been thinking about a move to the US and continue my career. I was wondering if any of you guys would know of any police departments that would take on british citiezens? I am also aware that some police departments run a sponsorship programe, could anyone shed any light on this for me?
I would be very grateful of any information provided
P.s I hear there are some British folks working for police departments in Las Vegas?
Thanks again

To my knowledge, most states require police officers to be US citizens. At one time, I think Hawaii would take permanent residents (green card holders), and I think there is another 1 or 2. A temporary work visa will probably not be enough. Getting the permanent resident status is going to be a chore. One route would be marriage, but that may be a little bit of a redical move. Assuming you are not married toa US citizen, you will likely spend several years gaining the permanent resident status. In short, I think you will invest alot of effort and money, and may still not have success.
I think Canada and Australia are worth looking into.

I think it varies by department...
The key is you have to be able to carry a firearm...I think there are some citizenship issues associated with that...
The key is to find out where you would like to be in the US, (it's a big place, brother...And as culturally and as politically diverse as Europe) and work toward that agency's requirements...
I think your biggest problem is the fact that no one here can understand what Scotsmen are saying, especially when they're drunk:D

Good luck Brother

There's school police, taxi authority, North LV, LV Metro, Henderson, City of LV Marshals, County Bailifs, park police, and the federal guys at lake mead. I think all require US citizenship, if I'm not mistaken
Are you sure they aren't in LV on a temporary basis for training? I haven't heard of foreigners employed by local dept's, outside of training or ridealongs. I'd have no idea about the feds

Las Vegas Metro Police don't even do ride-alongs for UK cops so I'm rather doubtful they're looking to recruit us.

New to forum, but here is my 2 cents.
I am also a Brit living in the US , i have my green card as well.
Some Depts in Corrections will hire non Us citizens, however if you want to be a patrol officer and not work in a jail, then I know that Vermont has many departments that do not require citizenship, but you do need a green card.
I am currently in Virginia and currently working on getting a very specfic form to have the requirements waved, so my advice is read State Statutes and call call call.
I will have a posting here on this forum with regards to my exp in the hiring phase.
Good luck and watch ya 6
In California, a peace officer must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. The only exception is with the Highway Patrol, which requires citizenship at the time of appointment.
