View Full Version : Drinking Minors

I will be attending college as a freshmen this fall and am wondering about the possible repercussions of a Minor in Possession ticket in getting a job as an LEO. I am always very cautious when I choose to drink but I have known several people who have gotten minors even when they were being careful. So I have naturally become curious as to what a minor would look like if one was to apply to a dept.
Any insight would be appreciated!

It will appear on your record as a criminal violation. Enough said if you are equal to the next guy on the list and you have the violation and he does not guess who gets the position.

One violation for underage consumption will have little effect on your efforts to become an LEO. That's a general rule however.
your time would be better spent figuring out how to not get caught with alcohol as opposed to spending time trying to figure out if an open container ticket will get you DQ'ed.

Actually, your time will be far better spent studying than drinking. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time - or stand to not have the job. How will you feel if you don't get hired because of that violation? Is drinking at all worth perhaps blowing your career? Only you can decide how much that beer is worth vs. becoming an officer.
Is it a complete bar to employment? No.
Could it be the break point? YES
You choose - it's only your life.

Thanks everyone. Believe me, I have every intention of playing it safe, but I got a little curious if it happened. So far so good and that is the way I want to keep it.

I got an MIP when I was 18. It didn't affect my ability to get the job.

Sleuth said it best. The odds are miniscule that one possession by a minor charge will have anything to do with you're getting hired or not. The chance does exist that you and another will be equally qualified and the tie breaker is that he/she have a clean record and don't. your life, your choice.

From what it seems in background investigations (BIs). An MIP when you're 17/18 isn't really that bad I don't believe, atleast in my city where you're not an official citizen until you've gotten an MIP! :)
I don't think its devastating but you'll need some other things to balance you out and show your maturity. College credit will help that, so get as much as possible. It also wouldn't be too bad to do some volunteer work if you could to show that you are willing to serve the community.
If you apply as a "plain-Jane" candidate with nothing but a high school diploma you probably won't be taken as seriously as the other candidates with college degrees and the like. Of course it depends on your city, if they're 50 officers short, they might be willing to take a risk on you.
Anyway it goes, good luck and I wish you the best
