Hey, I was just wondering if some of you wear sunglasses, gloves, and what type of holster do you use?

I do wear sunglasses, but I take them off when I'm talking to someone. They're not too expensive, as they can get really damaged in an arrest, or lost in a chase.

I wear gloves, but not those ones that protect you from needles and sharp objects when you search someone. Gloves save me having to wash my hands over and over again (I still do though  ). I wear gloves mainly to aid me if someone pulls a knife on me, having to touch someone if they're sweaty, and also for confidence. I find that gloves help my confidence in both handling and searching a subject. They also aid driving as well which is great.

I use a Bianchi 7120 AccuMold Defender Holster. It's about 60 bucks, and it's damn well durable!

Odd question.
Gloves when it's cold outside, never to portray a tough guy image.
Sunglasses when driving on on traffic duty
And a pretty pricy retention holster.

By the way the sunglasses are inexpensive Panama Jack wrap arounds all black because after you break one expensive pair of designer glasses you learn.

Gloves- an older pair of Hatch leather search gloves. My third pair. If I stay true to form, there will be a fourth and fifth.

Sunglasses- prescription. I've taken crap from coworkers about getting contacts, or laser surgery... but in reality, I've been thankful several times that I wear glasses. Those polycarb lenses have saved my eyes several times from being hit by flying crap. One little projectile cracked a lenses. If I hadn't been wearing glasses, I'd be wearing a pirate eyepatch today.

Holster- We were originally issued a Don Hume speed holster for the Glock 22's. No retention features, other than a thumb break. I loved it. We were recently issued Safariland Raptor II's. I don't like it at all. Given a choice, I'd go back to the Hume in a heartbeat.

Any particular reason you don't like retention holsters? I carry my Glock in the Safariland triple retention holster. This holster pretty much saved my life. The only thing keeping the gun out of the bad guys complete control was the internal device and "other strap". I will never go on duty without a level 3, unless of course they make one better. I can draw out of that holster just as fast as some of those out there with a level 2 or 1 holster.

I would much rather have the retention than shave a few nano-seconds off my draw speed.

I don't agree. The only thing keeping my gun out of bad guy's hand is ME. The equipment is only as good as the officer carrying it. Any retention holster can be defeated. You're fooling yourself if you think otherwise. They are not a substitute for sound tactics, or weapon retention skills.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with retention holsters per se. I just don't like the Raptor II, because it's uncomfortable for me in day to day wear.

I have to remove my rig and lock it up several times a day, going in and out of the Jail. The Raptor tends to slide around on my belt when the belt is straightened out. The Hume had a screw that locked it in place on the belt. The Raptor's curved plastic mounting plate feels like it digs into my hip bone when I wear it in the same spot as my old one.

Retention holsters are great when you're in crowds, or with kids/teenagers around. Especially at parties when there are people everywhere. I agree that "The equipment is only as good as the officer carrying it" but extra protection is great, just in case.

Thanks for your answers guys, I just wanted to know if I was the only one wearing gloves on duty, as no one around here does but me.

i keep my gloves handy, but do not wear them unless it's cold outside (even rearely then), i'm going to a good disorder, or i get that feeling that i'm gonna have to chase someone (then because i always seem to cut my hands up going over fences).

i think most guys look like goobers wearing gloves around all the time and if you talk to people in any of the neighborhoods where you work they will tend to agree. as a matter of fact i had a conversation with a toad the other day and he was bagging on this guy that used to work for my dept for always putting his gloves on and unfastening his holster every time he walked up to someone. not to mention that you can't id print a car on a traffic stop with gloves on.

I have Hatch leather gloves that I wear when it's cold out and/or I'm going to get into something and I have time to put them on. Also wear them when I'm doing vehicle searches -- I put my hands too many places that I can't see that could hold needles, blades and other sharp-pointies.

My holster is a Safariland with just the thumbbreak. Works for me and I'm comfortable with its level of retention.

I'm in a bit of a bind when it comes to sunglasses. I used to wear contacts but stopped because my astigmatism meant they never fit right. I have prescription sunglasses that I wear when driving in sunny conditions. I usually don't wear them if I'm going to be making a lot of traffic stops becuase the chief doesn't want us talking to people while wearing sunglasses -- he thinks it's too intimidating for the kind of run-of-the-mill contacts we mostly deal with. And it's too much of a pain changing sunglasses for regular glasses every time I get out of the car.

I'm even not much of a candidate for Lasik, according to my optometrist. In the immortal words of Stan Fox in The Jerk, "Damn these glasses!"
