hello everyone, my name is Dustin Bruce im 23. I have applied to many depts. on the northeast (Boston, NYC, Suffolk County, White Plains, Mount Vernon, Providence RI). I just got a letter from NYPD saying that i have to come in for the start of my background investigation. Other than that i am in the waiting period. im also wondering if anyone is NYPD and could let me know what they do for the BI. Thanks Dustin

Before they start the actual investigation (aside from the preliminary checks they might run first) they're most likely going to have you take the medical screening and the physical agility test. For the medical you'll have to go to Queens and endure a process of filling out forms and standing in line for the various checkups. Be prepared to stay there for about 6-8 hours. After that, you'll be scheduled for the agility test at the academy which will consist of a trigger pull test, an obstacle course, and a 1.5 mile run (which you'll need to do in 15:30). Once you pass that, the actual background investigation will start. You'll schedule an initial interview with your assigned investigator which is when you'll hand in the packet of forms which they'll be giving you when you go in for the first time. The forms are the usual: basic info, your work history, schools attended, driving record, etc. It just takes a while to complete them all since they force you to scan in the forms and type them (they don't accept handwritten forms apparently). As long as you don't try to hide anything from them and you don't have any major problems in your past (even sealed juvenile records WILL turn up when they run their checks), you'll be fine. None of these things are a big deal except that it's a very tedious and longwinded process.
Oh, and there will also be a written psychological evaluation as well as an interview with the department shrinks. I can't tell you anything about this aspect since I haven't been subjected to it myself yet.
One last piece of advice: Make sure you're crack on time for everything they schedule you for (this may not be an issue for you but it was for me, I nearly screwed myself over for coming late to the medical. They sent me back home and told me to come back the next day).

I am about to graduate from college and applied to take the written exam for the NYPD this June. Have you already taken it? If so what is it like? Thanks and good luck

the test is allright there are a few tricky questions i got a 90 on it but i studied for like a month and a half. just go to the book store and pick up one of those civil service exam books and go to town. some of those even have actual NYPD exams in them. so just look around. good luck.
