Credit rating & Reserve Training

What is considered a bad credit rating? I have a score of 700 but I do have a lot of debt. I have never been late on a bill. Will they look at the score? Amount of debt? Or all of it? If they look at the amount will the factor in my wifes wages as well?
Also, in CA they have reserve police officers. If I was to get POST certified in CA as a reserve officer would other police departments see this as a positive? Would I then be considered a lateral transfer or would I be the same as a new hire?

The background investigator will look at your total credit picture. They will look at not only your score but if you are in hock up to your teeth. Are your payments more than income sort of thing. If you become a Level I reserve in CA you will have completed the basic academy. Reserves in CA who are hired as regulars are considered new hires as far as I know.

The main thing is that you're not late in your payments. The amount of debt really isn't as important as whether or not you pay all of your bills on time. The big problems occur when people end up having accounts put in the hands of collection agencies or they declare bankrupcy.
