Hello all,
I am a Police Officer for the Veterans Affairs Police Service in Connecticut and am looking to relocate to North Carolina in the near future. What is the hiring process like in NC for municipal/state agencies with someone already in Law Enforcement? I've been on the job for about 2 years with my LETC Cert. and various P.O.S.T. credits. Will this help or do I start from scratch? Any info would be greatly appreciated...

I suspect you will have to attend an academy again. Years ago, Charlotte recruited some officers with out of state certifications, and those officers attended a shortened training academy, but that program ended years ago. I think the minimum academy length in North Carolina is about 4 months, with the larger departments lasting about 6. Most large departments (Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh) will send you to their academy after hirig, smaller departments tend to expect you to attend an academy on your own, before being hired.

Basic Law Enforcement Training in NC is 608 hours over 16 weeks. There are some medium size depts that hire you before you go.Smaller ones do not because of cost. They can sponsor you and that saves you money on tuition. The BLET academies are ran by the community colleges. Here in NC you can work up to 12 months as a DEPUTY without being certified but before the one year you must be enrolled in BLET but you are on the payroll when you go through....Hope this helps

I have heard of incidents where Sheriff departments hiring without the BLET cert and then a year after hiring the BLET cert was waived due to OJT. Dont know how true this is but heard it through the grape vine from a guy that worked the bloodhound k-9 (he is about 350lbs and about 5'2" and was not certified)
