Re: WMD - Bioterrorism
An open letter to my friends and colleagues in law enforcement, fire, public safety, and public health related professions:
A Call to Arms - Let?s Roll*
A weapon of mass destruction isn?t necessarily large?a tiny microbe can be as deadly as a nuclear bomb. And the microbe is far more easily concealed With all the recent rancor in the media on the perceived failures in our intelligence capabilities as to Iraq?s WMDs, it is easy to overlook that local law enforcement, fire, public safety and public health agencies have a new emerging mission. In the 20th Century, our wars were fought on foreign shores and oceans. With the dawn of the 21st Century came 9-11, which made us painfully aware that the great oceans no longer are a barrier to hostile attacks in our homeland. It is clear this new War on Terror is being waged in our own backyards as well as overseas. Those with the mission of pursuing and enaging our enemy on foreign soils are clearly identified. This is our superior U.S. military that is well trained and formidably equipped. Those of us, who are the boots on the ground at home, have a new mission. We must recognize we are the ones who must engage and defend our communities from hostile attack. If we are not prepared, we fail our brothers and sisters in uniform who go in harm?s way everyday to root out and engage this enemy wherever they are given safe haven or attempt to hide.
