I have several questions. I am 30 years old and I am thinking about a career switch. I currently work in IT and I want to pursue law enforcement.
1. How do they conduct a background search? What information are they looking for, and how do they get it?
2. Oral exams. What are they really looking for? Are they looking for me to stay clam during the interview, or are they looking more at answers? Is this to see if I can think on my feet? or will this be very canned?

use the search function on the top of the page to look up topics about this, there are lots.

then ask specific questions if you can't find the answers you're looking for.

I have already used the search engine and did not find the answers to my questions. If you think I have missed something then please direct me to a POST that answers me questions.

First of all, be completely honest. Address any issues that may be in your past in an up-front and candid manner. Explain any immature actions as just that. Don't make excuses for any stupid things you may have done. During your oral boards, be sincere. Don't try to respond according to how you THINK they want you to respond, but rather how you legitimately feel in response to the question. A false response is usually very transparent. The bottom line: be yourself.
