This is going to be a really lame question and one that started out with a simple answer, but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered...

Simply put - Does your hairstyle create an impact on background investigators?

*While I wait for the laughter to die down*

Seriously folks, law enforcement appears to be somewhat para military so would (and im not talking extremes here) a certain hair style be better than others?

IE: I have a clean cut hairstyle that is has somewhat of a mild wave in front (my hair just kind of stands up). If say, my hair was buzzed to military shortness, would that create a different impression on a background investigator?

There`s no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb people who ask them!:p

Seriously, clean cut? Shouldn`t be a problem. The job has to move into the 21st century sometime. Now if you show up with a Mohawk and your head has tattoos advocating ritual sacrifice, you might have a problem.

Be neat and clean and above all, talk liberal.

Conservative is okay
The Kojak look means you're already a whacko cop.
Hair growing out of ears but not on head means you're an old whacko cop.

Seriously CONSERVATIVE and clean shaven gets you in.

If hair really impacts anyone's decision, it's going to be your interview panel and not your background investigator. Your BI is more concerned with your background and your openness than your hairstyle. The folks conducting your interview are the ones who are going to grade you partially on your appearance.

From what you said, I don't think there's anything wrong with your hair. One main reason that a lot of cops have military style haircuts is because they were in the military and are used to that type of hair style. I actually tend to wonder about those people who get the short military style haircuts and have never actually been in the military. Do they actually like that haircut or do they think that it makes them a better or more tough looking officer? Hmmm...

As a former background detective, yes hairstyle does make a difference. Not entirely by itself, but along with how the rest of you looks.
