I'll be 28 years old in couple of months. I'm a Marine Corps veteran. I've not held any previous positions in law enforcement. I have countless ride-along hours with deputies where I live now and my uncle who is an officer back home. So I got an idea of what they go through, but no personal experience myself.

I do have some college under my belt. I've been working in the IT field for a few years. Computer geeky guy.... I do have it good where I am, as the pay and benefits are phenominal but I know this is not where I want to be the rest of my days.

I'm originally from Kentucky and would like to move back there, given a solid opportunity to do so. Not that Iowa is bad :) I've made a lot of friends out here with the city and county LEO's but I'd really like to get back closer to home.

If there are any KY dept's hiring, I am interested. I will say upfront I have a few tattoos, and couple below the elbows so if that's going to be an issue, then there you have it. Nothing offensive, just fantasy art (dragons and such). I am a clean cut, straight forward and highly motivated team player and hope my skin art from my warrior days in the Corps would not interfere with my goals to serve.

Email is in the profile if you're interested in contacting me.

There are quite a few KY departments hiring. What are you looking for in terms of an agency? Large? Small? County? Municipal? State?

I think the tattoo issue may pose a problem with some agencies. The agencies I am familiar with all have policies against visible tattoos, so you may find yourself wearing long sleeves all year round.

I'm not very picky. But, wherever I can get the chance I'll definately consider it.

There's only one dept I know of that has a no visible tattoo policy back home, and that's a sheriff's office. The other dept's surrounding my hometown don't have that policy but they don't seem to be hiring either except for some college kids coming from that Police Corps thing.

But back to your immediate inquiry, as far as agency... I really don't have a preference. If one of them are willing to put on a hardcharger then I'm there. The only drawback to this, and I've already experienced this once before is the fact I live over 600 miles away. There was a dept hiring back in my hometown area that I tested for last april. I passed the written exam no problem, but then they wanted me to come back like 3, 4 different times for this and that and I simply can't take that much time off for road trip after road trip with no sure guarantee I'm even going to get hired. For whatever reason, that particular dept would not do everything they needed to do in one or even two trips.

So if an agency could work with me on that, then that would automatically get my attention ricky tick. I have no problems driving overnight the 600 mile trek for this, I just would hope anyone who actually is hiring would work with me a lil on doing as much as possible in one or two trips. That seems reasonable to me anyhow :)

I know Lexington will complete the hiring process in two trips for out of area applicants. On the first trip you complete the written, physical, and oral, and on the second trip you complete the psych and polygraph. If you're hired, you have to come back again for the medical exam. The only negative thing about Lexington is that there has been a lot of attrition over the past years because of low pay. Officers start out at approx. 32K per year and only max out in the mid 40s. There's a lot of overtime available though. I believe Louisville is the same way in how they handle out of area applicants. Those are the two largest departments in the state (other than the KSP).

Other departments are hiring too, but I don't see the smaller ones being as friendly to out of state applicants as the large departments are. The main thing is that a lot of these smaller departments don't like 'outsiders' coming into their towns and becoming cops. They'd rather keep jobs local. By making you come back for each step of the process, that deters out of area people from applying. Around here, I know that the Fayette County Sheriff (Lexington) is hiring, as is the Wilmore PD and the Jessamine County Sheriff. I recall seeing ads in the newspaper about the Paducah PD, Ashland PD, and the Owensboro PD also hiring at this time. The pay is pretty shabby at these places, I wouldn't look at making much over $25-27K in salary your first year. Versailles and Jeffersontown are hiring too, however they only take certified applicants. Many departments here are so small that they only hire when they have someone resign or retire. You're probably best off going to the agency link section on O.com's website and e-mailing some of the agencies to find out whether or not they're hiring.

I don't know what area of Kentucky you're interested in moving to, but there's always this option: get a job in corrections (very easy to come by here and doesn't require multiple steps in the hiring process) and once you move here start sending out police applications. That way you won't have to make a trip here every time you test with an agency. I know that the corrections dept. here (Lexington) is hiring like crazy, but they only pay around $12 an hour to start. I think you can even apply on their website at www.lfucg.com .
