I've been trying to get into the LAPD for almost a year now, and I've come to the realization that I just chose the wrong time to apply.
When I first started the process back in March 2003, it was during a big recruitment and hiring period in Los Angeles. After six months, I finally got word that I passed all the requirements, and was on the waiting list for the Academy. Unfortunately, my oral score of 90/100 wasn't sufficient to get me into the November class, I've been waiting ever since.
At my background investigator's urging, I retook the oral interview 2 weeks ago, and made sure to prepare hard this time, reading books and seeing a recruitment officer. I felt I did very well in the interview, but I just got a letter today that informed me that based on "the City's current budget situation and the reduced level of Police Officer hiring," my score was not high enough. I'll try to find out just what my insufficient score was by calling them on Monday, but to say I'm frustrated is an understatement. (Update: I improved my score from a 90 to a 93, but it seems to be short of the golden '95' I suspect is the cutoff)
Does anyone know what the current hiring outlook will be for the LAPD? There hasn't been an L.A. Academy class since November, to my knowledge. I know the city's in a bad budget crisis right now, and an article in the L.A. Daily News (http://www.dailynews.com/Stories/0,1413,200~20954~1919139,00.html) mentioned that only 168/200 officers left or retired, making hiring even less than normal. A grim outlook indeed...
Are there any other steps I can take to get in at this point? My scores will start to expire after a year, so I guess I'll be retaking lots of them while I wait...
