What should I expect when I go to this, I have never been to a job fair before, Will it be just agencys taking applications, will people there be answering questions? If I get phone calls, should i take whatever is available, to get my proverbial foot in the door?

I have heard Customs, and Corrections have been recruiting quite a bit in my area (Detriot, Mi) I suppose Criminal Type job would be better than Auto Parts...

What do you officers think?

My university (Western Illinois University) holds a HUGE LE job fair every fall. Most departments are from the Chicago suburbs and the state police was there also. At our job fair they were handing out lots of information (bring a folder!!!) and telling you all about their hiring process. They also gave you information on hiring dates, test dates, etc. I would also highly recomend taking a notebook along to record names, departments, phone numbers, emails, anything that could help you out in the future. There were a few departments actually handing out applications but most of them were simply handing out info on the department and if you were interested you had to call or go to the department for an application.

I was personally there to check out possible internships about next summer and got myself some excellent contacts. I've been in touch with a guy just about every month through email and it's looking very good that I will get this internship (keeping my fingers crossed).

These job fairs are more importaint than allot of people treat them. Most people just go, walk around, and say hi every once and a while. Dress nice (nice pants, nice shirt or sweater), look good, make sure they know your name and most of all, if they give you information, call or email them a week or so later to say thank you and that your still interested (even if you arent. You can never have too many backup plans). This will get them to recognize your name when the time comes.

It's a great event where you can get all of your questions answered. I would recommend you write down questions so you don't forget when you go there. If your LE job fair is anything like ours, don't miss it and go prepared. It's an excellent opprotunaty to get valuable information and to make contacts. Something far too many people don't do. Good luck!

Mike

Contact. look close at Customs. (I was a Special Agent for 27 years, so my opinion is a bit skewed.) I enjoyed the job, got to visit 11 countries, and really had a sense of doing something for THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES - you know, the ones mentioned in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. The money was good, working conditions good, Supervisors - well, some were Stupidvisors, but that happens everywhere. Equipment was very good, personell policies were good. And I had the chance to move around the country at my choice.
I reccomend it, if it appeals to you.
