***Another near-by police agency has recently switched to a nice new communications center. In the last 10 days certain things have happened that lead them to believe there are video and audio devices present that were not in the old radio room. The issue at hand is if they are on video-audio 24/7 "no one has told them about it yet." I was hopping message board members here in this forum could offer some advice, share prior/similar dilema(s) if any, or point me in a better direction to research the matter. I need to know what can be done about the matter i.e. what recourse is available?

To my knowledge, an employer (even a civil employer, like a PD) has the right to use cameras and/or mics to monitor their working environment, as long as they do not place them in bathrooms. There are no requirements that employees are notified of being monitored. This could be a result of complaints that the staff of the communications office made inappropriate comments to officers/911 callers, or it could be that the number of calls to 911 has stayed relatively the same while the number of calls answered have dropped.
Face the fact that there are more and more cameras installed all the time, in businesses (mostly to guard againsed theft), at homes (in the case of web cams and "nanny cams") and in public (traffic light cameras and in some areas, cameras on the streets looking for general crime) which cut down on the amount of privacy perceived by the average American. But I would go so far as to say, as long as the government cannot legally install cameras or "bugs" in your home without court approval, the amount of privacy lost is negligable. Just make sure you follow policy/the law at all times when you don't know that you are safe from "prying eyes and ears".
