I have been in the US Navy Reserve for 11 years and was called to active duty Nov '01. I just came home and am looking for a job in law enforcement. I worked almost 2 years as a military police officer and obtained my TCLEOSE Nov '02. I received highest academic in my police academy. While active duty, my work included patrol-citations, traffic accidents, domestic calls, shoplifting, police escorts, fire/security alarms, DWI/DUI, contraband seizures, arrest/detention, assist civil service, suicide, etc. In addition, I was promoted to Field Training Officer and then Watch Commander (supervisor) over 30 personnel. My evaluations are all outstanding. Upon coming home, I tested with my local PD and I tested 6th out of over 80 persons. Unfortunately, I have credit debt that was charged off 6 years ago that prevented my hire. I have since had one technicality or another preventing my hire. My age is also an issue (40). One agency wanted 5 years active military service or 5 years prior police experience, another wants 20/70 vision-uncorrected, another requires 60 college credit hours for individuals with a GED (like me) while an individual with high school diploma at the same agency doesn't need any-I have 58 hours. I have 24 SMART hours from military training, but some agencies won't accept. I have a home in Desoto, Texas and I don't plan to leave it, so, it must be local-Dallas metroplex. I have applied to one agency as a reserve officer to retain my license (still waiting on that one). I'm not making it on unemployment...does anyone have any leads or suggestions? Desperate!
Keep applying.
There is bound to be an agency, in your general area, that will accept your qualifications.
The credit history will probably be the hardest to overcome, but it can be done.
Check out some of the smaller agencies. They are generally easier to get into, and are almost exclusively looking for already licensed PO's.
Good luck....

You might try applying at the school district police departments.
Good Luck

Good Luck
I have applied to two. One required 60 college credit hours and the other never called me. I'm currently taking a course that will give me 61 hours in December, but the issue seems to be my age. I have a friend who went to the same police academy as I did. He and I have applied to several of the same PD's (applications even sent in the same envelope). He has considerably less college and military experience than I do, yet, he has received calls whereas I have not. Frustrating!

Don't know if Irving is too far but they are testing in December or
January.
The last I knew they did not have an age requirement. Shoot they
hired a guy I went to the academy with and he was 47. Metroplex is
a great place to work but the competition is STIFF! Come to Houston
and you can nearly walk into a jobs down here.
Good luck! DFW is my old stomping grounds and got broke in up there at two differant agencies, so if you have any questions, feel free
to email me.

I will definately call Irving. If I can get any referrals, that would be great. DFW is close to me. Thanks for the info!

I checked into Irving and found the usual. Age limit 21-35 or to age 44 with 5 years active military duty or police experience. Back to square one. Thanks anyway!:(

I am not sure how you are on relocation, but most if not all agencies in S. Florida do not have an age requirement, and some do not even check credit.

Check out www.lvmpd.com we are always hiring and all you need is a High School Diploma or GED. Plus you get extra 'points' for being in the military. Two years ago, we had a guy turn 50 during the academy. Also, I think we even offer a relocation package.
It's not really close to TX but we have a great department with good bennies and excellent pay.

Well, I have to remain in Dallas/Ft Worth for now since I have a home and family here. I love law enforcement and the people in it are great people, so I'm not giving up. I may have to take other work if I can't find something soon and work on some continuing ed for TCLEOSE. I'm hoping to find at least some reserve work. You are nice people...thanks!
