View Full Version : Rugby World Cup - 2003

Following complaints made to the IRB about the All Blacks being allowed to motivate themselves by performing the 'Haka' before their games, other nations were asked to suggest pre-match rutuals of their own.

The IRB Rugby World Cup 2003 Organising Committee has now agreed to the following pre-match displays:

1. The England team will chat about the weather, wave hankies in the air and attach bells to their ankles before moaning about how they invented the game and gave it to the world, an how it's not fair that everyone still thinks New Zealand are the best team in the world.

2. The Scotland team will chant "You lookin at me Jimmy?" before smashing a Iron Bru bottle over their opponents' heads.

3. The Ireland team will split int two, with the Southern half performing a Riverdance, while the Northerners march the Traditional route from their dressing room to the pitch, via their opponents dressing room.

4. Argentina will unexpectedly invade a small part of opposition territory, claim it as their own "Las In-Goals-Areas" and then be forcibily removed by the match stewards.

5. Two members of the South African team will claim to be more important that the other 13 who they will imprison between the posts whilst they claim the rest of the pitch for themselves.

6. The Americans will not attend until almost full time. In future years they will amend the records to show that they were in fact the most important team in the tournament and Hollywood will make a film called 'Saving No.8 Lyle'.

7. Five of the Canadian team will sing La Marseillaise and hold the rest of the team to ransom.

8. The Italian team will arrive in Armani gear, sexually harass the female stewards and then run away.

9. The Spanish will sneak into the other half of the pitch, mow it and then claim that it was all in line with European 'grass quotas'. They will then curl up under the post and have a kip until half time, when their appeal for compensation against the UK Government will be heard.

10. The Japanese will attempt to strengthen their team by offering good salaries to the key opposition players and then run around the pitch at high speed in a highly efficient manner before buying the ground(with a subsidy from the UK Government).

11. The French will declare they have new scientific evidence that the opposition are in fact all mad. They will then park trucks across the halfway line, let sheep loose in the opposition half(much to the delight of the Welsh) and burn the officials.

12. The Australians will have a BBQ before negotiating lucrative singing and TV contracts in the UK. They will then invite all their mates to come and live with them in Shepherds Bush.

13. Unfortunately the Committee were unable to accept the Welsh suggestion following representations from the RSPCA.

Cheers,

Well the Boys in Green just about beat Argentina over the w/e.I was a complete bundle of nerves but a win is a win.

Now for the hosts next weekend. To be honest I don't fancy our chances , esp. after that display against the Argies, but it's a funny old game.Stranger things have happened ;)

Either way it's the 1/4 finals and more liquid brekkies.

2 losses in successive days
:o :o :( , not a good w/e for the Boys in Green.

First we win the international rules game but lose the series aaaaaagh and then we get beaten narrowly in the rugby aaaaaagh.

For those of you unfamiliar with the International rules series between Ireland and Australia it is a compromise game of Aussie rules(which I can only describe as a mixture of Rugby and Gaelic football played with an oval ball) and Gaelic football(which is best described as a mixture of Rugby and Soccer).

2 fantastic entertaining games but on the day in question we just weren't good enough.Ah well, roll on the 1/4 final game against the French next week.Unfortunately they've been playing better than they have during the last couple of 6 Nations championships, but I'm hoping for some luck of the Irish :D

G'day Gazza ,

Definitely no kissing !! That lad Hall who plays at full forward for you guys is one BIG geezer.I had to laugh at a couple of our blokes who tried to square off to him during the two tests , they just bounced off him !!

I gather from the various outlets here that the possibility of a 3 test series with 15 minutes quarters is being seriously considered.Although your team capt. Crawford doesn't seem to be in favour - time constraints etc etc.

We gave a good account of ourselves for amateurs v pros.Ah !! but who was in the box with Gary Lyon ? none other than ex-Dublin Gaelic football star Jimmy Stynes  His brother Brian is a firefighter in Dublin and a recently retired star of the Dublin side.

Speaking of Rugbyman , I wonder where he is ? Has he joined the fellow countrymen of myself and JK after 2days game ? Probably another Guinness o/d after the match against the Welsh :D :D

Roll on the 1/4s

The Irish are everywhere in Melbourne at the moment. It is a Sea of Green. International Aussie Rules - Rugby Union and the Melbourne Cup.

When you think of it - Ireland is a great nation. The Emerald Isle. It's awesome when you think back on the great people it has produced, great craic, great music, poets, singers, dancers, actors, bushrangers, soldiers, fighters and of course Guiness and sure if it wasn't for the Irish, they wouldn't have any Police Forces in America.

Tomorrow is Melbourne Cup Day and hasn't that Irish Horse, Holy Orders captured the News Headlines. They flew the horse out from Ireland to compete in The Melbourne Cup and he won't gallop during training. The trainers have tried chasing him with a tractor, but he still won't run, but he has captured the imagination of the Mad Punters and they are backing him like crazy. I am going to take a Trifecta tomorrow - Tyrone - Big Pat & Holy Orders. Well, you never know the luck of the Irish.

Ireland gave the Australians a run for their money at the Rugby -what a great game. Australia was lucky and if Ireland can beat the French, well, it will be on again!!

I love the Guiness, but could take or leave Kilkenny. I reckon the best beer around at the moment is Cascade Premium from Tasmania.

Anyhow, enough of my ramblings - its good to see you three blokes posting again.

Cheers,

New Zealand v South Africa
Australia v Scotland
France v Ireland
England v Wales

Hot tip from the Lady in the Canteen is that the finals will be between the All Blacks and the Poms ie New Zealand and England.

France 43 - Ireland 21 !!

The end of another World Cup.Outclassed , outplayed and to be fair soundly beaten. We were never at the races. The French took their feet off the gas in the 2nd half and allowed a degree of respectability to creep into the scoreline.

A shame that Keith Woods international career had to come to an end in such circumstances, he's been a fantastic servant to the cause over the years.

I can't see the Welsh causing England any major probs and England will be too strong for the French next week.

Time to look forward to the 6 Nations :) DRINK !!

Bit of a scare for England this morning, still it will buck their ideas up in time for France and NZ.
Perhaps one of you Ireland supporters, albeit not from Ireland! Could answer a question. Is the Ireland team just from Eire or does it include Ulster? I have never seen an Ulster team and was wondering.

Thanks to Andrew Irwin from Canberra, Australia.

"After the Australian v Ireland match (and the Melbourne Cup) in Melbourne, three of us decided to drive the Great Ocean Road. On Wednesday night we went to a pub in a small town called Apollo Bay. By the end of the night (1.30 am) it was ourselves, two Canberrans and a chap from Darwin singing away with a group of about 20 Irishmen, 2 Scots and a local called Wilbur who had swapped a t-shirt for an English jersey.

The Irish knew heaps of folk songs and were having huge fun, particularly one chap, who had sung several quite haunting solos. Beautiful stuff and the kind of camaraderie that only a Rugby World Cup could bring to a small pub on the south coast of Victoria in Australia"

Just thought that I would share this with you, for I know well the experience that Andrew Irwin from Canberra would have enjoyed in the company of these Irishmen.

It was nearing the end of the Rugby World Cup. The seven dwarfs went off to work in the mine one day, while Snow White did the housework and cooked their lunch. However, when she went to the mine to deliver their lunches, she found there had been a cave-in, and there was no sign of the dwarfs.

Tearfully she yelled in to the mine entrance, "Hello - is anyone there, can you hear me?"

A voice floated up from the bowels of the mine: "New Zealand will win the Rugby World Cup"

"Oh well", said Snow White, "At least Dopey is still alive."

The New Zealand economy is going to have tough times ahead, the dollar is going to weaken, they'll be job losses (starting with the All-Black coaching staff). Labour will be thrown out of government like National was in the last World Cup loss in the semis in 1999.

This is a country in mourning, they had written off the Wallabies but now what do we do?...at least we have the America's Cup....oh damn.....no wait.....I mean hey how about our Netball team...world champs!

I must admit Australia played a brilliant game, and we choked.

Yes co911, I had a fair idea that your wife was an Aussie, I now recall that you mentioned it before on an Aussie LEO Website. Don't forget, the next time that you and the Mrs are down this way so let us all know.

Brotaki,Rugbyman & Leigh (Go Wagga Wagga ;)) - its not over for the Wallabies yet and I am hoping that we get to play England. I reckon that the whole country will stop to-night, just to watch the game between England and France.

What a magnificent series it has been - the stories that I have head on how life long friendships have been formed between people from all over the world - in Pubs - Trains - Buses - in the Streets and Parks, people can been seen wearing their nations colours, all singing their national songs. In so far as I am aware, there has been no trouble between the Rugby Supporters; just imagine what it would have been like if it had been a Soccer series.

If the Wallabies lose, then I guess the ANZAC tradition will again unite us and we shall go into a period of deep depression and take our anger out on the politicians and just go on hating the Poms.

Better late than never ...... congrats to the English lads on the w/e's win.To be fair they were the better team on the day and for most of the tournament(It's about time the cup came to the northern hemisphere).

I reckon that if too many of the squad don't retire England will dominate the game for a couple of years yet, and as for that Wilkinson lad - Priceless and he's still only 24.
