I'm moving to Jackson, MS (area) in about 20 days. They are currently accepting applications for police officers. Is this a good department? Any suggestions? Also Nachez and McComb are hiring...any word on them? Also, I've been looking for the requirements to be a Miss State Trooper and have had no luck...anyone know? Thanks for any input.

I've heard some bad things about Jxn PD. Typical management problems. But I have also met some really good officers there who had good things to say and gave me the impression that the "bad stuff" (like anywhere else) was not representative of the whole department.

I have heard great things and very few bad about Pearl PD (suburb of Jxn).

MHP is a good outfit, but it's pretty competitive to get on.

No matter where you start out, I'd go ahead and take the opportunity. In MS, you're all on state retirement, so if you switch to another agency in a few years, you won't mess up your retirement.

I agree fully with what Sparky said. To add a little. Last year for our annual retrainer, we had a Lt. from Jackson PD give us a lecture on ethics.

He made a very good impression on me and in a sense, bragged on his department.

He did, however, tell us about a few problems that Jackson PD was having. He told us about a number of officers that were taking payoffs from drug dealers. He said that they were paid to guard the shipments of drugs that were being distributed in the Jackson, MS area.

This certain individual told us that the department was doing a good job in getting rid of those "bad apples" within the departmet.

All I can say is good luck and go for it. Remember this, no department is perfect and you'll never know if it's right for you until you try it.

To help with getting info on training and the Mississippi Highway Patrol, maybe this will help. www.dps.state.ms.us (http://www.dps.state.ms.us)

Without the support of our fellow officers, sometimes we have no support at all.

An officer left my department a year and a half ago to go work for the FBI. He was/ is assigned to Jackson field office. He came back up here for a wedding a few months ago. He told us that during his first week there, he went with some other agents and arrested six Jackson police officers right out of roll call. They had been dealing drugs out of their cruisers and all kinds of crazy stuff. Needless to say, the relationship between the Jackson PD and the Feds is strained.

This guy was a helluva cop here, and I'd believe his version of things any day of the week. I would wait awhile and see if all of the dirty cops get weeded out.
