After watching some Network and MTV specials on illegal street racing, it got me wondering what different jurisdictions do, if anything, to stop this. I just spent the last hour or so looking at the Virginia State Code and using a little bit of imagination, I was trying to put together a list of charges a creative prosecutor could bring against racers and those who aid in racing, as well as the auto shops that provide the means to do the activity. I've been reading the text of the law, and depending on how you interpet it, I found that depending on the circumstances of the crime, in Virginia, those who take part in street racing could be charged with:

1. Racing (No explaination needed)
2. Reckless Driving (ditto)
3. Aiding & Abetting Racing (Same as #1, only for those who don't do the driving)
4. Disorderly Conduct (Racing in public streets is very disorderly)
5. Conducting an Illegal Gambling Operation (People bet tens of thousands of dollars on the outcome of this criminal activity, and they do it with out regulation from the state, so it is illegal gambling)
6. Use of a Police Radio/Scanner in the commission of a crime (Often these racing groups will have a scanner handy to watch out for police)
7. Criminal Solicitation (Encouraging others to participate in one or more of the above crimes)

Now, This is if you apply the law in its broadest terms. I didn't even include the crimes you might add if something goes wrong during a race and people are injured/killed. Then you are looking at the big crimes (For example, depending on the circumstances, a good prosecutor might be able to indict on Murder in the Second Degree, if someone dies as a result of street racing).

So what do you guys do to stop street racing?

Although I am not a cop, I can say that my jurisdiction has a race track for racing. Sometimes the cops will be out there and actually race people!

We can (and we DO) impound the racers' vehicles for 30 days, as per California Vehicle Code section 23109.2.

Kinda hard to race when you don't have any wheels...

If you tried to stop my racing by taking my car I would just go buy another and race twice as much and twice as fast! I have no respect for the police, or for the law!

I think I hear your mother telling you get your fat butt away from that computer and start cleaning your room like she told you already!

This is why God made Kel lights!

What would he do if his mommy didn't buy him another car?

This geek doesn't even have any hair on his azz yet. If he had any real ba!!s, he'd be out on the street doing real crimes, like robbing banks.. But he'd just wet his pants as soon as the teller lack at him for being such a sknny little punk... or maybe a fat punk... either way.

But he's just a pasty skinned geek whose taking a break from a long, hard Dungeons and Dragons game...

No wait.. that requires friends.

He's probably alone in his room while his parents are gone looking at porn and wasting Kleenex.

we just make sure our roads have too many curves to race on ... of course, the motorcyclists choose to race sometimes anyway, in which case I just make sure the Total Station is ready, and I have film in the camera. I don't have a problem making overtime to document and scrape the roadway ...
