I never was trained to touch the tail light. I was trained to touch the trunk/tailgate/quarter panel.

If by tail light you mean crotch, then yes, I touch my crotch ALOT during traffic stops.

Now,I imagine a lot of people know this. Can't that evidence be washed/wiped off fairly easily? I realize most dummies that have been violent towards an LEO aren't going to run right to the car wash,but..........?

It didn't use to be widely known, but then people started asking that question every other week here on Officer.com.

I was reading post here for a whole year before I found out, lol.

How else are you supposed to ward off the cows. I'm not doing the dance and those are the only two proven ways to keep them at bay.

Yeah, I figure it's so common and talked about (here and elsewhere) now that most criminals would wash their car if they ran. But then again, most criminals are plain stupid.

I think we need to start banning people who ask this question. Talk about beating a question to a pulp... and then a dead-er pulp.

So, why do officers tocuh the --- BAN!

I was going to bring them up but you got to it first. Thats why I won't pull over cars near bushes or thick trees. Darn Ninja cows throwing the pies at me. Taillight touching scares them off.

I find mushroom stamping a headlight works well. its well known badguys dont wash headlights. Once ive completed the stamping the occupants know i mean business.

Call me stupid, and I am when it comes to LE, but what is the reason for touching the tail light/trunk?

Because of cow attacks. Every decade over 1 officer is killed or at least slightly injured by a cow attack. When you touch the taillight of the car the cow (which is normally in a tree above you, waiting to pounce on you and eat you) will think that you're part of the car and will therefore not eat you.

It also discharges the static electricity in your body, thus making you invisible to the cow's eletro-vision.

You can NEVER take cow safety too seriously.

Hey, Asians are HOT. Well, Asian women at least.

Also, I hear people talking about Ninja cows. However the TRUE threat are Jedi Squirrels.

But I will touch the trunk to make sure my prints are on the car, and to make sure the trunk is shut.

I always touch the trunk, If I wrote them for a big citation, they call me a punk, After duty, I will go to the club and get drunk and crunk, while the girls touch my junk. Then I go home and sleep on the top bunk. When I play ball, I like to dunk. They say, that white boy brings the funk. And when I come on the polcie forums, I tell dlo he's been debunked. :P

How can you KNOW you are leaving prints ? Some of the info I read about fingerprints says that quite often a person can handle or touch something and not leave prints ?

Here's the explanation I got during Navy Law Enforcement Specialist school. You don't touch the tail light to leave fingerprints, you are actually supposed to put hands on the trunk, or hatch back door, to make sure it's latched and someone can't jump out at you when you walk past to the driver. It has nothing to do with leaving fingerprints, dna, or any other non-sense like that. It has to do with officer safety, yes while new cars have an emergency escape pull on the inside of the trunk, or even a trunk open button on the inside of the vehicle, not all older model vehicles (pre-2000) have these features.

This is SO true! It was weird....I stopped a car last night on Compton Ave and 130th St in Compton. Very urban area. I forgot to touch the car. Next thing I know is I'm being approached by the strangest sounding footsteps I've ever heard. Of course, I couldn't see past the headlights on my car as the night had somehow gotten even darker than before the stop. It was as if a black shadow had descended out of the night sky. The next thing I know, there is a cow staring at me. Then another. Then another. At first, I thought the Farmer John plant about 7 miles north east of my loc had sprung a leak and some of the livestock had somehow escaped. But that notion quickly faded as the cows zeroed in on me with their glowing red eyes....so creepy! Suddenly, it dawned on me....TOUCH THE TAILLIGHT!! I did, and the eyes of the cows faded back to their dull black, emotionless, stupid eyes as they walked off aimlessly into the night. The dark shadow that enveloped both me and the car I stopped dissipated. All was well. Oh, and I got a good misdemeanor cite out of it as well. I like stats. :D

Oh, and knock off the posting tactics thingies on a public site!! WTF are you guys thinking?!?!

We were told both when I went through the Marine Corps/Army Military police school. They said always touch it with your thumb as to leave a thumbprint in case something happens while on the stop to identify the car, but also to make sure that the trunk/hatch is completely closed.

I hate to tell you guys this but they were just messing with you. The real reason is the very terrible threat from tree cows.
