The FBI profilers respond to requests from assistance from local and state law enforcement agencies. Unless a murder violated some federal law (murder of a federal employee, murder on a federal reservation), homicide investigation is a local or state responsibility.
I would refer you to John Douglas' many books to gain some insight into the FBI profiling unit (I believe it is currently called the Serial Killer and Child Abduction Unit). I might also mention that the Massachusetts State Police very likely has trained criminal profilers. I would also suggest a visit to the FBI website. Check the Agency section of officer.com. You may find some information there.
Good luck onthe book.

John from Maryland:
cesarcarlos specified "abductions" as well as killings.
The FBI investigates kidnappings, because they are presumed to include the possibility of interstate transport.
If in the opinion of an assigned Special Agent, a second kidnapping was perpetrated by the same person who had perpetrated the one he was investigating, there would be a strong escalation of the investigation, and additional FBI personnel, probably including profiling specialists, would be involved.

Monty

I would second John from Maryland's reply. John Douglas of the FBI (retired I believe) was the main man in the BSU (Behavioral Science Unit, later to be known as the ISU, investigative support unit) He has written several books on the art of profiling and I would recommend you read one or more of these. I would personally recommend Mindhunter by John Douglas. It gives in depth explanation as to how profiling works as well as citing specific examples of cases that he worked on. Good luck with your book!!
