I recently received an application for police officer postion in a small south Florida local dept. It included an affidavit which, if signed, would afirm that I have not used any tobacco products in the last year. I cannot honestly sign this piece of paper and that disqualifies me from employment. Is this a legit reason for disqualification or is it some liberal minded city council trying to be politically correct. I understand the health implications but aren't bullets flying past your head more of health risk than smoking?
P.S. I haven't had a cigarette in two weeks. Hooray!!!

It's quite possible that you will not be covered by the health insurance if you are (or have been) a smoker. That would prevent them from being able to hire you. I sincerely doubt that the department cares one way or another.
As for the health risks, the odds of your aquiring lung cancer (if you are a smoker) are significantly higher than catching one of those flying bullets!!

I think David is right on the money here. They probably have their health insurance premiums tied in to a no smoking policy. If so, they certainly will not risk there lower premium rate by hiring a smoker.
IMHO this is total discrimination and should be fought. But it would probably be a losing battle.
Lord I DO get sick of the safetycrats that tell us how to live our lives!
