Hello everyone. I am in need of some big help. I am a member of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriffs Department Aero Squadron. We are a volunteer organization, and we do primarily air sear and rescue missions. We work together with a ground search team, posse, dive team, coast guard, CHP, and many other organizations. Our liaison officer was at our meeting tonight, and spoke about anything that our organization needs. Someone mentioned that we desperately need a new vehicle, (right now we have an

Before you start looking for money try free. You are a volunteer organization and there is plenty of big money out there that may be willing to donate a rig for a little publicity. Go to local dealers and see what kind of response you get. We have had 4 wheelers, bicycles, vehicles, even a helicoptor donated to our department and associated search and rescue components. It doesn't hurt to ask. Even if it's a year or two old, the price is right.

Another option, considering the use (or abuse) it will be subjected to, is Government surplus. If you don't mind "pre-owned, check on the CUCV's. Those are the camo Chevy Blazers used as support vehicles. They're strong and VERY inexpensive through surplus. Since they're a military looking civilian Blazer, parts are a dime a dozen.

Also check around other city departments. We jsut got a Suburban from our roads department and striped it out for use by the marine unit.

As far as lights...the more the better!

The Federal Government has a program that permits the Military to transfer assets (Just about anything from night vision equipment to cars, trucks, and boats) to civilian Law Enforcement agencies permitting they are used to combat drugs in some way.

I am unsure if you qualify for consideration under this program but it would not hurt to look. The program is titles 1033 and a link can be reached from the following URL:
http://www.drms.dla.mil/rtda/index.html

This site also permits a search of all current excess military equipment in the world.

Another place to search would be the surplus property web sites of each State. I know my state (NC) auctions off vehicles each week and bargains are common. I would also check with your State and local town governments to see if they would be willing to donate an older vehicle - might need some work but the price will be right

Remember: If its for free => Its for me

Thanks for the help, but the reason we are wanting a new vehicle is because it will be NEW. I know there are places and feds/state that will give money ($$$$$) to a LE Agency. I am thinking around $50,000 or a little more. Also, people have recommended that I call up local dealers for cars around here, and see if they will donate something. Thanks, and keep the info coming! http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Monte,

Why exactly would I need to do that? Do you know of any law or code stating against that? I was gonna put those D.O.T. warning things on the side warning of flammable materials. Do you know any of the specifics?

If the person driving the vehicle is a volunteer, you are probably not subject to DOT hazmat regulations. Even so, the person selling the fuel will probably have to ensure that it is dispensed into a proper cargo tank. I think the warning sign is a good idea even if it's not required. If you want to check with the DOT, you can call their information line at (800) 467-4972.

Hey Dave T... it seems that long link you supplied is causing this page to be so large, it's crossing some of the eyes of our older gents. http://www.officer.com/ubb/wink.gif

I changed your link to the home page link, instead. It fits this board much better... and all the links helpful to Matthew are on the home page. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif
