In most states, the state regulates it. Start with your dept. of professional regulation.

In Canada you need to be licensed by the Solicitor General's Office. This can cost anywhere from 5-60 grand depending on the type of security you are doing. You need a good supply of guards, insurance is high for a security company due to liabilty. It is best to hire LEOs to train your Security Officers as well, to help your liabilty issues. You need to purchase a few company vehicles and have a dispatch centre set up before you begin looking for contracts. And you yourself need a lot of experience in Law Enforcement and the ability to underbid for contracts or you'll never even get started. Its a hard field to break into, but unless you are in the top position you don't make any money.

What state are you in? If you're in Florida I can point you in the right direction.

Check out the American Society for Industrial Security. Thier web site is: http://www.asisonline.org/

If you are considering getting into the Security industry, I highly recommmend joining this org. and start networking. There is a wealth of professionals and info. here. There is a discussion forum here also.

Good luck.
