Greetings JK, hows things in Oz, as far as Im aware it is an ongoing thing, the problem is getting staff to police in Auckland which has had staffing problems (lack of) for some time. Most kiwis keep clear of it due to high (relatively) housing costs and work loads.
As I understand it the UK staff don't have much of a problem with that after some of the cities they have come from.

No, seriously - Pocket knives can be carried, however it does depend on why the pocket knife is being carried. If the police can prove that your intent was to use it as a weapon, then it would be classed as an Offensive Weapon and you could be charged with Being in Possession of an Offensive Weapon to wit......

By pocket knife I mean the small folding knife, say about the length of you finger.

For example, any combat type knife would be classed as a Prohibited Weapon and it would be unlawful to be in possession of such a knife.

There are Posters containing the pictures of such Prohibited Weapons, such as knives, knuckle dusters, nunchucks, swords etc posted in the Reception Areas of most if not all Police Stations throughout Australia.

Ok I got a few for the "Internationals" (Canada doesn't count, you're in denial with the fact you are the 51st state. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> :D ).

What kind of handguns do cops carry in Australia , New Zealand and other countries w/armed police officers?

Do you have a handcuffing policy?

What type of court/justice system do you have?

And lastly, would OJ have been found guilty in your country? :D

Ok Bob, I'll go first - we have 6 States and 2 Territories. They are,

Australian Capital Territory
Northern Territory
Victoria
Tasmania
South Australia
Western Australia
Queensland
New South Wales

In Australia a Territory is administrated by the Australian Federal Government and not a State Government, but just to confuse things the Northern Territory is still a Territory but has now its own Leglislative Assembly and governs itself as would a State.

I think that Australia will eventually gain another State; New Zealand. (wink)

Ok Bob, now its your turn - what are the names of your 10 Provinces and 3 Territories and what is Canada's definition of a Territory?

Cheers,:)

John you sure the NT has been classed as a state i was under the impression that they were still vying for reconigtion for state hood and that the Federal government was considering it and that there was supposed to be some sort of referendum held up there for it...but then again i could be wrong...again...cheers old boy

JohnKelly
07-08-2003, 06:44 AM
I stand corrected Gazza - NT is still a Territory eventhough it has it's own Leglislative Assembly with the same powers as a State Government.

Go to the top of the class, but don't take your books, because you won't be there for long.:D

p/s - I got a great tour of Pentridge Prison, in its empty and decaying state. I know Prison Officers who worked there for 30 years -how on earth did they work in those conditions?

Cheers,

John i loved my time there better than these new high tech places now the crews that used to work there were a very tight bunch a lot easier to trust your offsider then than now, now its who am i working with and are they ok then you had no probs with who you were rostered on with, also it had a lot more spots so we could hide from the Governors when they done there sneaky little patrols, but you are spot on with the decaying bit,did you notice the angle of the blue stone wall leading from 9 post up to the officers mess it was near on 45 degs....how long you giving me at the top of the class...cheers John

To give it it's Sunday name the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is made up of 4 separate countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I haven't a clue how many administrative units the UK is divided up into because they keep changing them ! We have County Councils, Unitary Boroughs, District Councils, a Scottish Parliament, a Greater London Assembly, a Welsh Assembly, a suspended Northern Ireland Assembly and heaven knows what else !!

For police purposes we have 43 Police Areas in England & Wales, 8 in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland. The bounderies of these police areas do correspond with those of local government units. Though to confuse matters many are still named after units that have now ceased to exist !

They are currently threatening us with Regional Assemblies in England which could lead to the regionalisation of the police forces and more confusion.

Ok Bob, now its your turn - what are the names of your 10 Provinces and 3 Territories and what is Canada's definition of a Territory?

Canadian Provinces

Newfoundland
Nova Scotia
Prince Edward Island
New Brunswick
Quebec
Ontario
Manitoba
Saskatchewan
Alberta
British Columbia

Territories

Nunavut
Northwest Territories
Yukon

Territories differ from Provinces simply do to there isolation and minimal populations The political structure are: Nunavut is governed by the Nunavut Planning Commission; North west territories are governed by the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories; the Yukon is governed by Yukon Party. All these Governments are basically the same as other Provinces.

The basic history:

In 1870, Canada bought Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory from the Hudson's Bay Company. After the discovery of gold in the late 1800s, the government sent the North West Mounted Police there to show Canada owned and controlled the area. Canada basically didn't want the US to claim it after gold was discovered.

As of April 1, the Northwest Territories was divided in two. The new territory is called Nunavut ('Our Land'). This 'split' has occurred as a result of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. In accordance with this, the Nunavut Planning Commission (NPC) will help the Inuit control all the activities on their lands as well as a say in what goes on in Crown land. The finalization of the land claim settlement and creation of this new territory is an important development in Canada's present and future.

Sorry for boring you, but you asked.
