I know there are two others I asked a person at my school who has some connections and she told me she will let me know around the end of this week. When I find out I will post

Also I'm curious, does anyone know if reserve officers are authorized to carry firearms? thanks

Scarborough recently posted an ad for reserve officers. "Primary jobs to be filled are for beach patrol, but other opportunities are available as well."
A PDF of the ad is here (http://www.scarborough.me.us/hrga/documents/resofficerad.pdf). That should get you to the town's Web site, and under Human Resources, there are links to a job description and an application form.

I'm a ways up the coast from Scarborough (I think I've been there twice), so I don't know any more about it.

Re the question in post #4, all the reserves I've ever known were working armed.

Old Orchard Beach Maine hires a bunch, upwards of 20. They are quite busy, have both bicycle and foot patrol duties.

I am not sure, but I think an applicant must have some training prior to applying. Maybe a 2-week course, but like I said I am not sure.

They are taking applications now, here's a link:http://www.oobmaine.com/Pages/OldOrchardBeachME_Jobs/I028280C2

They are officially called Summer Reserves and are armed.

I tracked the above link out to the page http://www.oobmaine.com/Pages/OldOrchardBeachME_Police/employment/index, and it says "The Law Enforcement Pre-service School (LEPS) is not required but preferred." They do require a minimum score of 47 on the Alert test, so I'm guessing they sponsor applicants to the LEPSC or do a "registered apprenticeship with a certified, experienced officer, to be followed by an examination given by the board (of trustees, MCJA)." The Alert test is a prerequisite to enroll in the LEPSC.
The LEPSC ("100-hour course") or the apprenticeship is the minimum standard under Title 25 (http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/25/title25sec2804-B.html), for a person to make arrests and carry a firearm on duty.

Summer reserve officers in Old Orchard Beach (OOB) are armed, and have pretty much full police powers while on duty. When off duty they can carry on their creds although those credentials expire in October.

Here are the basics for OOB reserves.
(1.) 21 years of age or 20 with 60 college credits
(2.) Graduates of the (LEPS) Law Enforcement Pre-Service course (reserve
academy) preferred.
(3.) Minimum score on the ALERT test is 47, the ALERT test is a reading
writing and comprehension test. It is not graded on a 1-100 curve, a 47
is the equivalent of about an 83 on the 1-100 grade curve.
(4.) If you do not have the LEPS, you have to pay for the course, but if the
course starts after your hire date they do pay for your time.
(5.)The Dept. issues you a side arm (G22) & holster, baton & holster, pepper
spray & holster, a base ball hat and a portable radio. You are responsible
for your other equipment. The uniform is a yellow bike patrol shirt that
you buy from the dept, black sneakers, and black BDU shorts.
(6.)Reserves are assigned to foot, bicycle and ATV patrols. After your first
year you may be offered a cruiser patrol slot. Cruiser reserves wear the
same uniform as the full time officers.
(7.) New hires are required to attend a 2 week in house training program,
approx 100 hours.
(8.)You will be assigned a partner and typically patrol in pairs.
(9.)The only thing reserves are not assigned to as primary on is a known
felony, the primary reason has to do with availability for court dates.

OOB is not the best paying reserve agency in Maine, it is however the largest at around 40 reserve officers, and the reserves who work there typically handle a much higher call volume then any other seasonal reserve officers in the state.

If you have any questions about the OOB reserve program I suggest that you call Lt. DeLuca at (207)934-4911

It is not graded on a 1-100 curve, a 47 is the equivalent of about an 83 on the 1-100 grade curve. Now I'll have to call up to MCJA and find out what my score was. (Not that I'm planning to apply to OOB.) I don't remember what I got on it, but I do remember that it at first looked like a crappy score. By that time, I'd done enough reading-up about the test to know about the different curve. (Like how NJSP and other agencies got sued for supposedly setting their cutoff score too high in order to exclude minorities. I think I'd have qualified for NJSP, even under the former standard. Well, alrighty, then. ;) )

Is there an "expiration date" on the ALERT TEST score? i.e., if you do not get into a LE job within a certain time frame, the test has to be taken and passed again.

RR_Security

As far as I know, there isn't. As mentioned above, it's really a reading comprehension test, mostly I think to make sure everyone can adequately grasp/absorb the material covered in the course.
Now as far as MCJA certification for anyone who hasn't worked in L.E. (and done in-service training) for a certain time, that's another story. They did run a course last year to cover that.

valvestem.

No the ALERT test doesn't expire however you can go back and try to improve your score.

As far as MCJA certs' yes they do kind of expire, however you can go take make up class and get re-certified. They hold the class at the academy and I do believe the class is 2 days.

P.S.
We have two of your former co-workers down at the beach now.

If you get a chance to do OOB, do it. I was there about 7 years ago and it was a blast, especially on nights.

Knowing what I know, OOB would be the place for plenty of action, and experience to be gained. They have some good guys down there that you can learn a lot from.

My vote would also be for OOB, but you might say I'm kinda biased. From whatI know of the two you will have a lot more freedom in OOB and if I remember correctly Kennebunk makes you use "pool" guns which is a sore spot for me.

Otherwise I hope you enjoy the OOB interview this week, don't worry if they attach the extension cord to the interview chair. They don't normaly plug it in. :p

I interviewed with both of them, they both liked me alot and I think I have a good shot for them both. OOB seemed like it has a lot more action which is what I'm looking for. I just wish I knew the pay thats the one thing I forgot to ask about, esp when auntie salle may wants her money in November.

Fyrdog I didn't see the extension cord lmao

You will most definitely see more action at the beach then k-port. I have found that OOB will normally let you have the freedom to go out and dig up some calls, while the Kennebunk's, Ogunquit, Wells, ect. just want you to stand around and look good.

If you decide to work at the beach, I hope you enjoy siting through my class.
If you decide not to work there, have fun where ever you end up, and stay safe.

Well thats what I want, if I wanted to stand around and look good I would stay where I am, thats good to hear. I've been dying to go to a place where I can handle all the calls I want, so it sounds like OOB is calling me lol

Nice ride, it wouldn't work on my beaches though, they're all mud!
It sucks that you guys down south get all the cool toys, Brunswick even has an airboat. I need a bigger budget.:(

Yeah I suppose it wouldn't be very good for patrolling the clam flats..... But for patrolling the wide sandy beaches and observing the unique wildlife in our area they work OK.

While OOB doesn't have an air boat I do get to play with one at my part time job patrolling the Saco river. I would say that is about as close to Mardi Gras as we get up here, yeah it's a fun beat to patrol.

Here's some pics of me and the crew on the river.

HIRED. . . . .I took Kennebunk. . . . OOB sent me the "we'd love to have you but we have no money yet" letter. . . .If i could I would take em both, but I don't think that would fly too well. So excited "retired" from my current job two days ago and now off to Maine! ! ! ! Can't wait! ! !

Congrats on the job, I hope you got the PM I sent you last week.

I'm sorry that you (and several others) fell victim to local politics, it currently looks like OOB will be halving the number of seasonal officers this year.

Stay safe and enjoy the tea and crumpets (aka bagels and Starbucks) crowd, because with the number of officer they are talking about having we may be calling you guys for back-up.
