My grandfather is a police captain, I overheard him talking about a "honorary" deputy sheriff he encountered the other day. I was wondering how do other law enforcement professionals view and how do they feel about Honorary/special police officers or deputys

"Honorary" simply means you are a friend of the sheriff.

"Special" varies in meaning and may denote a part-time officer.

I do not belive they have them in PA. Like I said in the PA forum, give a donation to the PA sheriff's association or PA police chiefs and you can get yourself a nice sticker.

I heard of one of a local Auxiliary Police Constable in Ontario being appointed as an honourary deputy sheriff in Ohio...Don't know the exact story on how/why...

Special Officers...We have something like that in Ontario...They are called "Special Constables", they are generally unarmed Law Enforcement/Peace Officers employed by universities, public housing and public transit authorities to ensure public safety and enforce the law in relation to those entities...They are generally well paid, are equipped with batons (and sometimes OC too), have police powers of arrest and can issue tickets/summonses for a wide variety of offences...

Police Services also employ Special Constables to guard the lock up, keep order in the courts, transport prisoners...

Some of the suburban municipalities near Toronto have "Special Enforcement Officers" which are Municipal Law Enforcement Officers assigned to rougher areas of town, and as such are issued with handcuffs and sometimes batons...
