Academies? No, I think they gave them a baton and told them to get out and crush crime. In my first job, they said, "Hold out your hands together" and he dropped about 30 bullets in my hand and then he handed me a .38 revolver and I was sent out into the streets. Can you imagine the liability of doing that today?

I agree that academy training has come a long way, however, there remain to be many topics which are not covered adequately in basic LE training, and still more areas that are not covered at all.
Trainers are often forced to fight to keep what little budget they have which makes it difficult to "do more".
In training, it is hard ot point to a direct result as an effect of students learning. It's hard for trainers to point to past success and say, "Here's what else we would like to do."
In forearms training in particular, we may be doing more than issuing thirty rounds and saying "Don't let the back door hit you.." however, we could also be doing much more than the standard "stand squared off on a target and fire" which is the basis for most basic academies.
Training is something that we must keep trying to improve on.
