I wanted to drop in to see if any LE trainers would mind giving us their thoughts on what they would like out of a professional association for experienced and professional LE trainers.

Without advertising too much, the NLETA is a new association. We restrict membership to those trainers who demonstrate the proper training credentials and have at least two-years experience.

We want to keep membership exclusive to provide a professional credential, and so that we may offer focused and direct services to our members.

Would any of you mind telling us what services that YOU would like to see in the way of support? As a LE trainer, this is YOUR opportunity to help create an association that offers services and benefits that YOU want.

Any input is appreciated.

What's the difference between your organization and others, such as International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), or the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET)?

Nice website.

Pugzly, I can already see one difference. Anyone with the money can join ASLET. NLETA is requiring both education and experience as a trainer to join.

I think the idea sounds great. ASLET has gotten to the point where membership in it means nothing to me as a trainer. This outfit sounds like they are looking only for real pro's, not just guys who want to be affiliated with another organization so their resume looks good.

I'll keep checking back to see how the rest of the site shakes out. I've already printed out the application though.......... sounds very interesting.

The NLETA requires an applicant to have successfully completed an Instructor Development course simlar to what most instructors go through for state certification. Not only that, but we also require that the applicant must have at least two years total experience. We are working on having each state recognize membership in the NLETA as also meeting state requirements for POST (or similar specs).

Additionally, to join you must be an active LE trainer. That means that you must currently teach at least part-time. It doesn't count if you used to teach. We want to focus our services on active, qualified professionals.

Niteshift, I am glad you like the website. Alot of work went into it. Please note that there have been some problems with the pdf version of the application and they contain a few errors. We're trying to get them straightened out, but we are on a budget. If you e-mail us your address, we would be more than happy to mail you our current materials.

Pugzly, to answer your questions more specfically I will say this;

The International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), and The American Society for Law Enforcement Training (ASLET) are both fine organizations and we encourage trainers to be members. NLETA membership does not supplant membership in any other association.

The NLETA was created to be a professional credential because, as Niteshift observed, not just anyone can get in. Members have permission to use the NLETA logo to identify themselves as members. Currently, administrators often get training announcements but have no idea if the instructor is not only qualified in the course, but also qualified to teach to an objective standard. NLETA membership signifies just that. A qualified professional.

One of the main differences is that we plan to offer valuable services on our website, like members pages where they can post their professiaonl vitae and a list of their course and subjects in which they teach. Those seeking training will be able to come to the NLETA website to search for training which they know is conducted by a qualified professional whose creds have been verified by the NLETA.

We also plan on offering other services like templates for lesson plans, class rosters, brochures, letters of agreement, digital projection slides with LE themes, online research, preferred vendor listings, and more.

We are currently a new organization and will rely on new members before we can expand our services. While we may have these ideas for where we plan to go. We will offer the services that our members need.

I appreciate both of your questions and comments. I am very interested to know what services that you could think of that you would like to see us offer.

If you could have ANY service in the world from a training association, what would they be?

I had hoped for a little more input.

I have recieved a few e-mails, and for those I am grateful.

I've posted something in the Ask a Cop area to help get some responses.

Really, we're trying to get some additional ideas on what trainers would like to see, as well as feedback on what we're doing now.

Any input is appreciated! ESPECIALLY any constructive criticism.
