Our firearms instruction team is interested in exploring the idea of using .22 conversion kits in our duty Glock's for the purpose of initial recruit firearms training. The first few day on the range for our recruits is all about safe weapons handling, manipulations, malfunction drills and establishing groups. We are finding that more and more of our recruits have little or no prior firearms experience. Our theory is that by using the conversions, we can eliminate one of the primary detriments to initial training; recoil and muzzle blast. Some students have a real hard time building confidence and skill because of their response to them. Possibly by using .22 conversions during the initial skill building exercizes, we can build confidence and competence and then move up to the full power caliber. Any input from instructors having experience using sub-caliber kits for training would be greatly appreciated. Daren Roeser, Portland (OR) Police

I have used a remmington pump 22 with a bead sight to assist new shooters who are having trouble with the shotgun, they then move to the .410 870 and finally the 12 gauge 870. It seems to help with shooters that are recoil sensitive.
I have never had a problem teaching a student to hit with a handgun I start with dry drills and then worlk on the skills slowly to detect and correct flinching and shot anticipation.
