If anyone here is involved in patrol work/interdiction, I would recommend taking a class put on by Sgt. Mike Lewis of the Maryland State police. It was a great class with alot of good information.

I took this seminar last year. It was excellent, but the only problem is he has been sued like crazy, and many states, especially in the northeast (I am in Massachusetts) do not allow consent searches as he conducts them. Maryland has looser rules on this.

However, the videos, and other props are worth it.

I attended a Traffic Enforcement conference put on at the North Carolina Justice Academy a couple year ago and one of the presenters was Sgt. Lewis. His lecture content and presentation style were excellent. He also showed us a few videos that he made while searching cars and hidden compartments.

This was very informative lecture and he truly has a nack for finding the drug courriers and their hidden compartments. One thing is for certain, this is extremely dangerous work and not to be take lightly. Many of the cars he searched had hidden weapon compartments and tons of booby traps for the unauthorized and inexperienced searchers.

I would highly recommend attending one of Sgt. Lewis's classes if you have the opportunity. He is certianly one of the top interdiction officers in the country and heads up the program for the Maryland State Police.

However, I don't know if I could convince my boss to start letting the patrol units carry portable power tools with them.
