Took my Oral board with FLPD about 3 weeks ago. First oral board Ive ever taken. Passed and on the list but not putting too much money on it just yet as I scored an 80%. If I do get a call to move on in the process then I'll be ready but not gonna get my hopes up lol.

That sounds solid man, keep up the good work. I know when I went for my ride along and agility about 2 months ago the sergeant that night told me they were looking to fill about 25 positions. So #11 is not BAD!

All the best,

I will have to agree with you that the department is hiring quite a few officers.

I hope to be applying soon as a lateral transfer from MI.

I am trying to find out how the City of Fort Lauderdale is to live in. Also, can you point me to add other web sites that talks about Fort Lauderdale.

Any information that you can pass along would be greatly appreciated.

Dont want to burst your bubble man, but I was told when I passed with 80% that it put me in the 9th - 10th rank. That doesnt mean I'm the 9th or 10th person on the list. It means I fall in that ranking with a bunch of other people within that rank. They only proceed to advance people within the 1st - 5th ranking. Sorry =(

Just keep at it everyone, you will all move up in rank eventually, it might take longer than expected because everyone and their mom wants to be cops all of a sudden. But ALOT of people will fail the psych test and just get DQ'ed for random stuff, its not impossible!

Okay I see that point, however there are 25 positions available....so the first 5 on the list get hired lets say, there's 20 positions left. So ranking top 10 seems decent no? In other words its not a list of people, there are certain grades based on your test score? They should really specify, haha.

I think what he was trying to say was that there maybe be like 5 or 6 people for EACH number ranking. I do not know if that is right or not, but that is what he was trying to say. Remember though to take information you read online with a grain of salt..

This is true there CAN be more than one person in each rank, but it doesn't mean that there always is. This should be explained in the letter you received with your rank #.

I don't understand how a rookie can outscore a lateral?

I mean I have some experience from fields like security, military, non sworn police work, aviation... but it doesn't replace lateral police work!

just don't understand how anyone like me would stand a chance...

They got Federal grant money to hire officers, buy cars, equipment, etc. They just need to get rid of the chief and it would be a big moral boost.

As for laterals? they still get ranked along with recruits. Obviously they could be and most likely are ranked higher but that is not always the case.

For all those in the process goodluck.

I have a good friend with military experience and he has three years sworn service as a PO in a different State who applied. They did not try to accommodate him in any manner when it came to testing, psych. , polygraphs. He took numerous trips down here. I heard their polygraph is a nightmare and you can fail one part, re-take it and then come back and pass the previous part that you failed and fail the part you previously passed. Yeah, did you follow that, it's insane. Solid candidate, not sure what his current status is.

RICK4334

THIS IS WHAT GOT EMIALED BACK TO ME FROM F.L.P.D.....Out of area candidates (those outside of Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach Counties) should plan on making at least two trips during the hiring process. Phase one: initial written, agility and swim test. Phase two: oral panel, polygraph, psychological evaluation and medical exam including drug screen. Every reasonable attempt will be made to complete the testing phase within one week for out of area certified officers. For information on hotel accommodations while in Fort Lauderdale, visit this section of our web site http://flpd.org/empoutoftown.html.

Okay so three days ago I called to schedule my oral board. The machine said no need to call a second time, leave your info, and I will call you in 24-48 hours. Well it's not been three days. Anyone know how long it usually takes? I would assume they are calling applicants in the order alphabetical order?

Well I don't know much if anything about these processes but I would imagine, last name, eligibility, or your credentials could be the factor. As with me I have an unaccredited associate's and no LE, military, not even security. lol.

Got the call yesterday, lucky me I was using the restroom. So she left a message and said that at this time there are no available appointments. She will call back early next week to schedule for early Nov-Dec. So no Nov academy for me haha.

Yeah I mean I read an article in the Sun City Sentinel last month stating there were 1500 applicants combined to Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. But I mean there will b plenty of people that'll wash out, not qualify, won't make it through the poly, etc. So no reason to not have hope meng. The world will always need more recruits!

You know what I remember reading something about how FLPD is a shyty dept and people are leaving faster than they are coming in. So why are they suddenly overwhelm with apps.? One word the "ECONOMY"!......good luck to all the applicants that when the economy was good wouldn't even think about law enforcement, because I realize those are the applicants that are getting hired, then again you don't need no luck, lol.

You are right, those who are getting hired. They won't last long though, if they do make it through the academy they probably won't last long on the street, they will miss their cubicle's eventually.

Well I applied and had my interview on september 24. Failed it by 1 point after they allow you to review what they put on file. That's 10 days later. 1point I failed. It wasn't meant to be this time. I believe it was intentional because I saw that one of the interviewers changed my score down 1 point. It's based on a 1-10 scale. I got mostly 5's. 10 questions. So on each paper you must have at least a score of 30. I had 30, 30, 29. Average score but barely making it. Sucks

My understanding is that moral is better after the last contract negotiations. They are in negotiations again, but don't really know how is going this time around.

On my ride along one officer responded that it moral was better. Another responded "I love it" when ask how he like working at FLPD.

My personal impression is that it's pretty good on the whole and a good place to work.

They do have a marine unit and have a lot of water ways to cover. Most Sheriff's offices and city's long the cost will have a marine unit. I don't have knowledge of any being bigger than others.

Anyone have any idea how long it takes to get a call back regarding the oral board interview. I received my ltr telling me to call to schedule my oral board interview, which I did on Friday. The answering machine said they would get back with me in 24-hours. It it now the end of the day on Tuesday. However, I do not know if they were closed Monday for the holiday (Columbus Day). I know they said no need to call back. I read where 813 waited three days believe.

Has one ever called back to try to speak with anyone. If so, how long did you wait.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I know I waited 4-5 days. Even then it was okay sorry for the wait, right now I don't have anything I will call you in a week to schedule it. Then the following week I was called and it got scheduled. They have a ton of applicants, I really wish I knew whether they interview anyone who passes the CJBAT. That would help, so maybe someone can shed some light on that. But in the the end they will call. All the best.

I have some questions regarding the testing etc at Broward College for The Ft Lauderdale Police Department. I am a former LEO from North Florida and will be coming down to Ft Lauderdale to test around Thanksgiving. Could anyone that has taken the pre testing ( swim, physical agility etc.) please email me or private me. flyboi757@aol.com

thanks

Vida Boa
10-28-2009, 05:10 PM
If you can swim, the swim test is easy. That's all it is. The only people I saw fail the swim test, could not swim.

If you have just average upper body strength the physical agility test is easy as well; a few people had trouble with the 6 ft wall and the monkey bars, because they couldn't lift themselves over the wall or hold onto the bars.

Who did you guys call for the ride along?

My oral interview is in December; got the call this afternoon.

I have been in since August, taking my oral board on November 2nd. Most guys it seems like 6-12 months. There is only one person I know that got hired within 30 days. However he had prior corrections experience, impressed the staff and that is that. As you are aware with the economy more and more people are applying. Not necessarily making it any worse to apply, just more people to filter through. But as you are aware I am sure you know that it takes a lot to get a few. Hope this helps.

Well, I passed the Oral and am on the eligibility list, but my scores where not so great and odds are they won't get to me on the list. So I'm moving on and if they get to me, they get to me. If not I can apply again in 6 month, but I hope to have gotten hired somewhere else before that. Have an interview elsewhere in a few weeks.

And yes they are hiring. They received some federal grant money recently. They had almost 19 positions to fill and as of a few weeks ago they still had about 14. It may be fewer now (not sure), but still more than many places.

Don´t feel so bad. I didn´t pass the oral board as well and this is my 2nd time. I failed it by 1 point. Some say it was intentional they failed me. I could have barely passed but they decided not to. I saw my review 10 days later which they allow you to. I had mostly average points (5) on a scale of 1-10 but on one of the interviewers paper he or she erased a 5 and gave me a 4. I must have passed but they could have re thought the outcome and said lets not give this guy a chance and failed me. Oh well. KARMA all i´m saying.

Plus the lady that gives you the news after the interview is wrong about if you don´t pass you can apply in 6 months. It´s still 1 year. She has her info wrong. Human resources asked me who tole me that and i said whoever the escort lady was. So yeah It´s 1 year. I probably won´t apply there again. I already have 2 strikes.

You guys should check your oral board status with HR. Make an appointment as I did and check your grade. What you will find is what you said in the interview. All you see different is how they graded you on the questions. Then an HR rep will ask you if you have any questions. All I asked was how is all this graded and she replied you must have at least a 30 on all 3 papers.

I received 30 30 29. Would have been 30 30 30 which is passing with bare minimum score but the last 30 was erased and gave me a 29 which looks intentional. Both police officers and general people I spoke to said the same. Oh well wasn't the time to be but doesn't mean I wasn't meant to be a cop. STILL TRYING. Good luck to all.

P.S. Don't be surprised if FLPD calls you back in 1 year asking if your interested to re apply with them. Happened to me the first time I failed the oral board. A sergeant called me 1 year later and I declined because I was in school and already invested time and money.

District 1 is not the "craziest", Dist. 1 is actually the slowest. Dist. 2 is the busiest and Dist. 3 is in-between.

An applicant must rank in the top 3 of his or her hiring pool. Unless things have changed which they haven't, our policy is to process only the top 3 ranked.

FYI multiple applicants can share the same position/ranking.

Vida Boa
12-16-2009, 03:43 PM
It's top 5 now. "Rule of 5" it's called. Anyone within top 5 rank can be hired, but like you said there are more than 5 applicants within the 5 ranks. And the top 5 is constantly changing, people get DQ'd or take other jobs, and more applicants come in. Timing is everything...assuming you pass all phases.

Yeah no kidding Sharp, I mean when I went back in July there was at least 50 people at the agility and swim. Maybe 4 people didn't pass both. I read an article a month ago that said 1500 applicants were recorded for the Broward County area. Did not specify which agencies but WOW. And it's unfortunate for people like me, because I became active in pursuing LE almost 2 years ago. TO find out that it is more reputable to have a degree, have experience and to be certified. So since I have none of the above it looks as though I am like every other person that just needs a "JOB" Don't matter, going to school now to get my degree, all in the past. God bless everyone on this forum that wants to do this job and DOES it already. There are warriors, heroes, and legends. And then there are those that do the job every day, that's what makes you men and women different, and in my mind BETTER.

Capt- you pull over a young lady that rolled a stop sign, when you approach her car she is yelling and screaming saying you pulled her over because she is pretty not because she did anything wrong. How do you handle the situation?

Me- I would calm her down and inform her that of why I was pulling her over.

Capt- what if she throws her license and reg at you then proceeds to be belligerent?

Me- I would take her out of the car, force if necessary. Detain her at the back of her car. Pick up her belongings, run her DL and if she is clean. Then I would speak with her to find the real reason why she was so upset. After she is calm and she chills out let her on her way with a verbal warning.

Capt- so you wouldn't write her a ticket?

Me- No

Capt- Are you sure?

Me- Yes

Now mind you I have no LE experience, not even a degree or academy. And I was told when prepping for the oral board don't go back on your answers because that looks bad, and then they try and make something out of you.

any help is appreciated.

813

Ok, so let me start by saying I'm not a veteran or an LEO. I'm not sure how I would have responded on the first two questions but I'm certain I wouldn't have handled this third scenario this way. What I would have said:

1) Asking her to calm down is almost certainly correct. Good start.

2) She's being belligerent and even threw her license and registration at you. So she's now turned a simple moving violation into assault on a police officer. Here's some things that come to mind:

3) Call for a backup unit. You're most certainly going to cuff and detain her at this point so why not have some help if things get out of hand. I'd probably request a female officer to search her if its possible. And don't detain her on the back of her car, detain her on the front of yours. In front of the camera. She's already said you stopped her because she's "pretty" so don't give her any excuse to file some sexual nonsense lawsuit.

4) Inform her that if she doesn't calm down she's going to jail. Simple as that.

5) Ok, now she's cuffed and sitting on the curb chilling out with my fellow officer standing by and you've run the DL, checked for warrants, etc.
I'd search her car for weapons (who knows what else you might find). Do you think throwing your license at a Police Officer is normal behavior? I sure don't. Maybe she's just had a bad day, or maybe she's hiding something. People often like to cause distractions to distract you from something else

6) So now everything is clean. Run the DL, checked for warrants, no drugs, no weapons. Time for a little lecture. Hopefully she's calmed down enough to realized she f'd up.

7) WRITE HER A TICKET! WRITE HER A TICKET! WRITE HER A TICKET!
Why would you say you wouldn't write her a ticket? Not only did she run a stop sign but she back talked to you and threw stuff at you. I'd write her as many as I could probably. :p

Also, check to make sure she isn't drunk. I should have put that in there but I don't want to go back and edit it in. Those are my thoughts as non LEO. Take them for what they're worth. Good Luck.

It matters because the panel doesn't want anyone to know what they are going to ask before the applicant gets there. The answer is not supposed to be rehearsed and the applicant needs to think of the answer off the top of their head.

what is the best way to prepare for the oral board interview?

Thanks

Well to begin be ready to answer "Why do you want to be a police officer?" and "Why do you want to work for our agency?" Don't use cliches like "I've always wanted to be a cop", they've heard that thousands of times before, and it doesn't do squat to really answer the question. Answer WHY you want to be a cop.

Beyond that, make sure you know what you put in your application so you give the same answers when they ask you about your background, so you don't look like an ***.

Also make sure you list EVERY ticket you have gotten, they don't like it when they look at your history and there are more tickets than what you put in your application. Doesn't look good. Best bet is to get a copy of your driving record from DMV, which is the same thing they will be looking at, plus they can go farther back I think, but if you miss anything more than say ten years ago it won't look as bad as something from 3 years ago that you neglected to put in the app.

Beyond that, dress sharp, shine your shoes, cut your fingernails, get a haircut (even if you don't need it, makes you look better with a fresh haircut). Look at everyone in the eye and don't fidget, and answer straightforward and to the point. Good luck.

For $750-$900/month, how do you know thats a decent neighborhood? Like mr. DW said its relatively expensive down here, but it al depends on where you're coming from. I would say for a decent neighborhood it would prob cost you $1100-1300. When I went through the process in August I was looking at Boynton Beach. Great area, expensive, amazing, and safe. In Palm Beach County, but the places I found were nice for the price man. $1200 for 2b/2b, marble counters, stainless steel appliances, wood floors, utilities included, 5000 sq ft gym, with personal trainers (yes you have to pay for them but it's a nice option). Gated community, 2 pools, it was sick for the price in my opinion.

Yeah, Hopefull101 has a good point. $750-$900 isn't going to be in a real good area. If you're from New York City then sure, its cheaper here. If you're from like upstate New York then probably more pricey.

Well put it like this, $1836 bi weekly so $36 and some change each month. No state, city, or count tax like NY. And with that you'd be in the 10% federal income tax range more than likely.

Not to smother your enthusiasm but I think you're a long away from an academy. I don't know if you are familiar how the selection process works for departments down here (assuming they are inherently different from where you're from) but you're probably looking at a good year or so, assuming all the steps fall into place. I mean, you haven't even taken the CJBAT, PAT, swim test. Then you got your interview, then your medical, poly, psych, then the background. And then assuming you score high enough you have to wait for a slot in an upcoming academy, so you're probably looking at 2011, objectively speaking....so I wouldn't be worried about how much rent is going to be at this point. Just saying this so you temper your expectations.

Don't waste your money!!! If you can read, write, and think logically then the CJBAT won't be too hard. You will not be tested on anything that a person would not know prior to a police academy.

It all depends on your rank after your Oral Board interview. I am bilingual in spanish and have a college degree, but that does not help you in terms if points towards your rank. Just make sure you score high on the oral board. Its all about where you fall on the ranking system. good luck.

Nyet...as Canes said the biggest determination factor for the ranking in FLPD seems to be the oral board. Speaking other languages such as Russian is fine, but frankly Spanish is more important in this neck of the woods, followed propbably by French/ Creole. But don't get me wrong, being bilingual will always look good on paper, but what will ultimately matter is how relevant it is to the job at hand. So if you were applying in an area with a large Russian community that's another matter. But again, try to ace the oral board and your chances will be much better of being referred to the rest of the process.

The TABE stands Test for Basic Adult Education. It consist of language, spelling, math and things like that. It fairly simple for most people with an HS education.

Most Dept. don't require it. So I would check before I spent to money to take it. I know Ft. Lauderdale only requires the CJBAT.

FLPD like most Departments down here don't have their own academy. They instead send you to a local College that has a Police Academy Program. Most likely Browrad College or Palm Beach Community College.

I could vary but each academy could have anywhere from 2 to 4 classes in a year. That's just off the top of my head, but should be in the ball park.

GREAT JOB... GETTING CLOSER. LOOKS LIKE U MITE MAKE THE JULY ACADEMY

Thanks, I have a long way to go though so I'm nervous about getting my hopes up too soon. Still seems possible for me to make the April academy. My Background Investigator said the BI should take about 3-4 weeks and the academy doesn't start for another 7 weeks or so.

I've been getting quite a few PMs about the interview so I'll give you a quick run down of what its like. Now, I'm not going to answer what specific questions were asked because I don't need to get into any trouble. My advice / info:

* Bring all your paperwork and know what you put down in it.
* My interview was conducted with 2 ranked officers and an HR rep
* They will take turns asking you questions.
* Expect questions about your history and things you put into your application. Expect basic oral board stuff. If you're not sure what that is just run a search on O.com.
* The last round of questions is situational questions.

Hope this was helpful.

Best of luck with your polygraph and the psch test. It would be interesting to hear what you think about Dr. Stock. You have to remember the JCBAT is just 40% of you score. Your oral board counts for 60%. It is incorrect that if you retake the JCBAT and score higher that that will push you up into the top 5 and get you moving further in the process. You can score 100% in the CJBAT but if the board doesn't believe you have what it takes you not passing much less even be inconsideration.

I good CJBAT score is important, but doing well in the oral board is key.

So does it make sense to re-take the CJBAT test to move up on the eligibility list? People on the site are saying different things.

Ok let me try to explain it for you a little better. Right now due to the economy and thousands of people who have no business in law enforcement, these departments swamp with applications and are looking for anything to kind of weed out people(so to speak). Now, as far as FLPD is concern, one of there many strategy in doing so is people with low CJBAT score. Its true that your CJBAT is 40% and your oral board is 60%, but in this current economy there is no way in hell a person who scores under 90% on the CJBAT and pass there oral board would ever move on in the process. They will be put on the eligibility list and with people constantly applying you will be bump futher down the list. So in conclusion, its in everyone best interest to score as high as possible on the CJBAT, preferbly in the 90's, hence one of my reasons I havent put in my application as yet. Im aiming for least 96%, because im not too worried about the oral board, im actually looking for to it. Hope this help.

Sure the higher you score the better. You can take it up to 3 time over a 12 month period.

I was just pointing out that if you number 15 on the list increasing you score by 5 points isn't likely to bring you into the top 5. You have to be in the top 5 to be processed. Even if moved you up to number 10 they are very unlikely to get to you on the list within the 6 months you application is active. Remember there can, and assuredly are, more than one person per rank. Even at number 15 there could be 60+ people above you.

I'm not saying don't take the CJBAT again, just that scoring 5 or 10 points higher is unlikely to move most people up far enough where they would start getting scheduled for polygraphs and stuff. Go for it just don't get your hopes up too much.

Just because you passed you oral board doesn't mean you scored high enough to be moved to other parts of the process. Your oral board score (count as 60%) will be combines with you CJBAT score (counts as 40%) to come up with a score. Unless you in the top five in rank you will not move on to other steps unless everyone else above you get DQ along the way.

Well let me regale you all with an interesting polygraph tale.

So I took my poly last week and they asked me to come back and do a second one because I guess I spiked on some of the questions. I ended up having to reschedule because I got sick.

Anyways, I went back today to finish everything up. I was feeling better, just a little bit of an upset stomach this morning but nothing too serious.

Well I guess I wasn't feeling as good as I thought because I passed out right during the middle of the questions. And not just like "I feel light headed" stuff. One second I'm answering questions, the next I see the examiner shaking me asking if I can hear him.

Needless to say, I was (and am) pretty embarrassed.
