Do your Correctional Officers have the RIGHT TO STRIKE or are they considered an ESSENTIAL SERVICE and not "allowed" to strike?
In some parts of Canada they have the Right To Strike but must provide "limited staffing" in the event of a strike. This must lead to awful labour relations having management and union working together during a strike. It isn't fair to either side especially when the fight is really with the Polititians.

No strikes for us in the U.S. We can however informational picket which does get the attention of everyone. Since we do this in front of the prison and any other government property like the courthouse we get our word out. We also picket in front of all the delivery entrances. Last time we did this we had no bread or milk deliveries. The drivers for the companies which are union said they would not cross our line. We also had no trash pick-up as well. UPS & Fed-Ex also were not delivering to the courthouse and the judges were getting quite upset. This kinda got the powers that be to sit down and discuss a resolution to the informational picket. We were on the news at every glance and all the papers which got our word out there.
Peace!

Tac pretty well summed it up.
One slight twist: since we are "at-will" employees, if we were to even picket off-duty, we probably wouldn't have a job the next day.
Our Administration tends to get a little narrow-minded that way.

in oz we can and do strikewe also will hold stop work meetings and work to rule which is a good one as it generates an enourmous amount of overtime,as if most jails are the same no one works to the exact regs that govern a prison we as a union place our members in tne prison ie-limited staffing for emergency, and for the general publics safetywe still have nonmembers cross the line thereby in the unions eyes they are then classed as scabs they are then listed and the list posted to other prisons of there actions as in most things they are happy to work in good conditions and take pay rises but when the crunch comes as usual there true colours show through you probally guessed im a union member i come from a long line of members and union reps hope this little bit helps ww http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

We dont strike. We work to rule. Which for some of us means that we have to work harder. LOL. We don't issue traffic tickets, or other fines. That way, the government does not get any revenue. Really hits them in the pocket.
