Do you have Intermittent Sentences? (those sentenced for example to 90 days to be served on weekends)
If so, do you have lots of problems with them bringing in drugs and other contraband?
Do you house them separate and apart from other inmates?
We have three programs:
1) After sentencing (usually in Family court) inmates can be allowed to go to approved jobs while being housed at night at the Jail. The money earned is ALL handled by us, with a $12 per day maintenance fee to the Department, a fee set by the court going toward (usually) paying back child support.
2) Community Service, where those working off traffic fines and other Class C Misdemeanors will be sent to projects such as Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Food Bank, and nearly any government entity that requests workers and give us enough notice. (City, County, etc. We recently had some 17-18 year old gangbangers assigned to assist the City's Graffitti Removal folks http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif )
3) Weekenders. These are usually Class B and Class A Misdemeanors, including theft, assault, DWI, and anything the Judge deems appropriate, to allow the offender to retain their regular jobs. All but the assaultive offenders are sent to the aforementioned work projects when available.
We have had people on all the programs attempt to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the facility. They may get by with it once or twice, but are normally caught pretty quick.
The offenders that do serve their time in jail are housed separately from general population.

Just trying to keep things alive in here!!!
Yes we had the "weekender" program. They were housed in general population. I don't think the ratio of them bringing in dope was any more than anyone else.
Most of these folks realized that they were being given one hell of a good break, where they could keep their jobs etc. etc. They were not really inclined to screw that up by trying to smuggle in drugs or anything else. In fact, most of them were model prisoners.
As far as I remember, this was only done for first time offenders that were mandated to jail, usually for DUI.

WW,
We have week-end detention in NSW. If the prisoners fail to attend, they return to face the magistrate or judge and can spend the full term in full time gaol.
We have seperate gaols for them. The one at Emu Plains is in a farming setting. They grow vegetables and herd animals.
I think drugs will get into most prisons.

I understand Intermittent sentences are a pain in the *****. If you can be in society Monday to Friday, then you don't need to be jamming up overcrowed prisons on the weekend. Instead they should be out doing charity work in the community or cleaning garbage off the roads!
