Any opinion on the Skechers Shape up sneakers? I saw them in a magazine ad and its supposed to be benefical to the body (or so it says). They look like they run about $100 and up. Any thoughts?

JB,

How much do they run? Are they true to size? I'm thinking about picking up a pair.

LOL, I thought the Sketchers were a joke. I'm honestly trying to figure out the benefit.

Well that is what I am trying to figure out. I would think maybe because they wedge or the design puts less stress on the feet and more on the say ***? I don't know....
The other ones look freaky to me.....

I only like Skechers cause they make the cop shoe, you know the flashing red and blues on em? If only they made them in adult sizes...*sigh*

The idea that high-tech shoes prevent injury or are "benefical to the body" is an advertising, not a medical, concept. There is evidence that expensive shoes increase injuries. (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/07/barefoot/) Human feet, like hands, are marvelous instruments, developed over millennia. As we add more protection to our hands, i.e. gloves, we impair their function. Probably works the same way with our feet.

Which is exactly why the Vibram fivefingers are better for your feet, thank you for posting that.
I talked about this some time ago on this same forum, I will repost the research links.

See the research here:
Here are a few articles that explain the "science" behind the V5 and benefits of barefooted training, walking, running, anything (if you even want to bother with it).

Yes, even a wikipedia link (benefits at bottom)

Everyone always talks about how weird they look, but I think they look better than stupid Crocs and flat boy flip flops...plus these are better and you can do more in them.

As to how much they cost, they are about $70-100, depending on what style you get. On the website I posted above, there is a store locator. As far as sizing..I HIGHLY recommend that you try them on before buying. These are done in European sizes, not US. I bought a pair of 43s based on measuring my foot and ended up selling them (for more than I paid, actually), on ebay. Now I have a pair of 44s, which are much better (bc I tried them on before buying).

By the way, I have the Sprints (which have the strap across the top). I wouldnt recommend the Classics, personally, I think they would fall off easily. They also have one with a bit of a "sock" called KSOs...as in Keep Stuff Out and some thicker ones with a sock called Flows for colder weather.

Those skechers promote the complete opposite of a natural footstrike.

Take a look at any of the long distance African runners who run barefoot...that's a natural footstrike and looks nothing like those idiotic sketchers promote. They don't land heal first and then transition over the foot and leg....

Brown is right, those Vibrams are the far better shoe if you want to promote propper walking/running. Though they are an extreme transition for someone used to the overly padded Asics\Nikes\etc to go right into the Vibrams.

A bunch of naturally petite women modeling gimmick shoes..brilliant

I have some fivefingers and love them, most comfortable thing to run in and just walk around in. Its all the good things about being barefoot without worrying about stepping on crack needles. If your worried about what people think or want something you can wear just about anywhere then get a black pair of Flows or KSOs.

Why would you have to worry about stepping on crack needles? Where the hell are you running?

Running through the ghetto makes you faster guarenteed, J/K but they do help when you step on rocks or broken glass occasionally. My point was just that you dont have the same concerns as running barefoot.
