As I sit here at work eating an inmate meal pondering on what it may contain and where it came from, I started reading the Yuck! thread http://www.officer.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001588.html on the general topic forum. Wrong thread to read while eating I suppose.
I was wondering how many of you out there who also work or have worked in a Corrections or Detention Facility eat inmate meals. And has anyone had a bad experience with them.
When I started here I swore I would never eat one, after about 3 months I finaly caved and so far they are not that bad. I eat one usualy everyday. I personally have never had a bad one or at least knew so. I know most facilities use the lowest quality meat possible to cut costs and so forth. Any one have any info to make me want to stop eating this, or maybe reasons why I should keep taking advantage of this free food.

I worked the county jail for a total of about three years. I almost always ate the same food as everyone else. Never had any problems, but MAN I HEAR YOU ABOUT THAT "MYSTERY MEAT!"
Actually that was just the canned beef, used for things like roast beef or caseroles. Our jail actually had very good food. It used to just tickle the hell out of me to be doing a transfer and pick up one of our locals. Almost every time they would tell me how glad they were to be going back where they could get a DECENT MEAL!

I've only eaten a couple, both in the Idaho State Prison System. I will probably be banned from this board for life for saying so, but the were actually pretty good. Especially the soft tacos. I guess some of us just have no taste buds, nor taste. Now, the stuff they serve inthe Las Vegas city jail. That is a whole other ball game. I was in there with an arrest a couple nights ago and I honestly could not identify one thing on the tray except the cookie. At least I think it was a cookie???? http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif

I have eaten a few meals at our county jail, I didnt think it was that bad, and it was a hell of a lot better than an MRE. It kind of reminded me of the food they served in high school. I also tried the Nutraloaf on a dare once, it's actually not that bad. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cwm8.gif Yall should give it a try sometime. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

One of my former assignments was in the kitchen at our Jail. I worked it for 2 years, and had a great time, overall. The imnate meals were mostly pre-cooked "heat and eat" (hamburger patties, meatloaf patties, chicken patties, etc) What the Officer were served was 100% beef hamburger patties, but no-one believed it. Ok, it wasn't the best but it wasn't bad. I think it was classed as 30% ground beef.
Anyway, most of the meals weren't bad at all.
For about 6 months, I had a cook for the Officer's dining room that made a world of difference. This guy was in Jail for hot checks and forgery. He also had a college degree in and had been teaching cooking at a Junior College. He was a professional chef! He could take the meager ingredients we had and turn out some of the best meals. It was a sad day when he finally got out. The dining room hasn't been the same since. http://www.officer.com/ubb/frown.gif
On the bright side, I did learn quite a bit from him. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
On the original question: I think the worst thing that someone has put into the food, is when someone couldn't tell the difference between sugar and salt and made some terrible cobbler http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif Although I'm sure some have tried, we usually keep a pretty close eye on the goings-on in the food prep areas.
BTW, if there is any question about the contents of the food, get a tray off the inmate serving line, they won't mess with that food!

I hear the mashed potatoes are great with gravy thick as pudding........ http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif
Worked in a max-pen for many years. We caught a guy with his butt over the chili vat.
Kool-Aid tank began to smell like urine.
Seen many convicts spitting in food.
Hair, roaches, sweat & who knows what was in food.
Found actual turds over oven to be added to recipe.
Still had a few officers eat the Free Meal daily.
Not ME.
