Have you ever had any police officers or correctional officers refuse to escort female offenders to a hospital for an abortion? If so what happened?

Is such a thing even required? Who pays for this procedure, the state? I would love to follow this one.

Our facility would do it. I have no idea what would happen if an Officer refused to escort her though. We take inmates to hospitals or clinics for all sorts of things under escort by two armed officers all the time. But all medical expenses are paid for by the inmate. We pay for nothing, they even get billed for the trip there and the cost of the escort.

I don't know of anyone in our Department refusing to transport on an abortion. We transport an average of 25 inmates to doctors appointments per week. We have had inmates refuse to go, but usually the only time an officer begs out is when they have had a problem with a particular inmate in the past and don't want a re-occurrence.

We have had officers openly express not wanting to escort but before it becomes an issue they try to find other staff that are willing to do it. So far this has worked out. But it really is hard to expect a woman who has just had a miscarriage to escort a female to an abortion. Common sense says you don't ask them!!!

The county jail I worked at wouldnt even consider letting the inmate get an abortion unless it was a life or death situation.

Are other jails allowing inmates to do this because the inmate wants one??? Once their in jail, their life is ours and if it a life or death procedure, it doesnt get done.....
