Have you ever just sat back and thought what if? Why do we subject ourselves to the everyday grind and dangers put upon us?

I use to work in a large state prison for 10 years. Over the years I really started to hate the job. The only thing that kept me going was getting that 10 years and getting vested with a pension. Convicts treating you like dirt. Admin. people treating you like dirt. Its tough working behind those bars.

I think that initially some of us become LEO's because of the job security. I don't know how it is where you are but policing and corrections in Canada are almost all government jobs whether municipal, provincial or federal. (Privitization is starting to evolve more)

From there, everytime we consider other career choices or jobs, we compare the job security. This may differ depending on whether you are younger and more into money verses older and more into job security. It will also impact if you are younger with family responsibilities. Its hard to get out once you are in!

I know I would be gone in a flash if I didn't have so much put into my pension. I always wanted to own my own private investigation firm but when I got out of school I realized you needed money to set up your own company... Forgot about that!!! :)

Hope you all dont mind me being here. I am assigned to Custody within my department and we spend a few years working the county jails before going out to patrol.

First the obvious, I am here because they make me come here. But then again I look at it and I have fun. I like the people I work with (co workers that is) and the pay and benefits aint bad. But then again, I work here with the knowledge that I will be out in patrol in the next couple of years, so maybe that is a difference.

Take care everyone. Watch your back.

A) Because someone has to do it.

B) You don't have to worry about the weather (most of the time).

C) Backup is not as far away as on the street (usually).

D) Personally, I've been there long enough that I have an "office job", and am not locked in for the entire shift. (My office is actually located about a block away from the jail)

E) Sometimes you actually get to see one of your former charges make good and NOT came back to jail :D and,

F) Sometimes, you really do make a positive difference in someone's life. And isn't that what it's all about?

JKT, I GET TO DO BOTH CORRECTIONS AND I'M ALSO A COP, I HAVE 14 1/2 YEARS IN CORRECTIONS, I'M A LIEUTENANT. I TO HAVE A OFFICE JOB NOW, BUT I STILL OFTEN WONDER IF I WOULD OF JUST TAKEN ANOTHER PATH. I'M NOT IN THE UNION AND SOMETIMES I SIT AND WONDER WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING HERE. I HAVE NO PROTECTION, I GET ALL KINDS OF SH-- FROM THE UNION AND THE ADMINISTRATION. I DO HAVE A POSITIVE OUTLOOK AT OFTEN AS I CAN MUSTER ONE UP. I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE I HAVE PUT IN HERE AND I AM IN SOMEWHAT OF A POSITION TO OFFER SOME HELP FOR THOSE WHO SERIOUSLY WANT IT. WHY AM I HERE, YOU KNOW THE ANSWER, THE LONGER YOU'RE HERE THE MORE MONEY YOU MAKE. I'M MAKING SOME GOOD MONEY AND I'M GETTING TO THE AGE OF NO RETURN AS FAR AS STARTING ANOTHER CARRER. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND ALL IN CORRECTIONS, IT'S NOT AS EASY AS SOME PEOPLE MAY THINK!

RCSO-7S05;

I have a little over 5 years on the street and 15+ in Detention. I am just a Deputy (by choice :) ), but I have seniority on most of our supervisors. I don't want the headaches that come with rank, and I have the ear of the majority of the supervisors now. My main assignment is background investigations, so it's a pretty good gig overall. It took me nearly 20 years to get to work 8-5, M-F with weekends and holidays off, but I kinda like it now.

I just wish our pay was competitive.

Our Lieutenants only make about $36-38K.

Not at all but once you come here you can't leave!! :) (I tried for a week and Gazza let me know it!!! :) ) I just want to repeat what I said in the other post about this section...I don't think of this section as only for Correctional Officers to bond and share ideas but also a learning area for everyone to talk about correctional issues that impact the Justice System as a whole.

Gazza, maybe you could start a dozen threads that ask for police/military/security feedback?
