Guard admits sex with Susan Smith


COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A guard pleaded guilty to having sex in prison with Susan Smith, who is serving a life sentence for drowning her two sons in a lake in 1994.

Lt. Houston Cagle admitted he had sex four times with Smith between May and June 2000 at the Women's Correctional Institution in Columbia, Attorney General Charlie Condon said. Cagle will be sentenced after a counselor completes a report in the next few weeks.

Cagle, who also admitted to a sexual relationship with another inmate, pleaded guilty to two counts of intercourse with an inmate and could get up to 10 years in prison on each charge.

Investigators found out about the relationship between Cagle and Smith last summer when they were looking into a report that Smith had been beaten in prison.

While that report proved false, Smith admitted to investigators she had sex with Cagle. He was fired shortly after his arrest.

Police later arrested a second guard, Capt. Alfred R. Rowe Jr., and charged him with having sex with Smith.

Rowe will go on trial Sept. 10, the attorney general's office said. Smith has been moved to a different prison.

The revelations that Smith had sex behind bars led to a broad investigation into prison misconduct. More than a dozen Corrections Department guards and employees have been charged with having sex with inmates or smuggling drugs since the investigation began last year.

The fact that the two arrested officers are high-ranking makes me SERIOUSLY wonder what's going on at that prison.

WW the story you just posted is the tip of the iceberg.

One thing you didnt read is that Smith caught a STD from one of the two officers, she is now in another institution, where she is isolated from the general population.

The story gets worse, inmates who were working at the governers mansion were engaging in sexual intercourse there. After that news story broke the head of the Dept. Of Corrections was terminated, and a replacement was brought in, the funny thing about it was that he had just gotten the job and was trying to end the problem of drugs in the prisons and staff/inmate sexual relations. This is an old problem that had been going even before Miceal Moore, who is now the head of Florida's Dept. of Corr., took over back in the mid 1990's.

The prison system in this state is in shambles, SCDC (South Carolina Dept. of Corr.) just announced major job cut backs due to budget constraints and announced that they would be closing some institutions. They have been having trouble finding quality help for years due to pay, I think there current bad press is a by product of there relaxed hiring standards.

Kinda obvious. And very sad.

We had a similar incident a few years ago, where a long-term officer was having sex with a female Outside Working Inmate (Trust'y) on a number of occasions. He was charged with Abuse of Office, with the allegation that he intimidated her into having sex with him because of his status as an officer. He's currently on 5 years' probation and will never work as a Peace Officer again (at least in Texas).

It was kind of a shock at first, but it does happen.

I have trouble believing some people have that much trouble controlling themselves.

easy to see where their brains are ww in the tip of their d??k.we had some male officers who worked our f.males nick n they got caught having sex with some f.male crims they transferred them to our prison whilst they where investigated but for some strange reason they resigned to gether (he he he ) the worst thing was they werent charged we have some funny laws at times in aussie land we have had f/male officers having it of with male crims and now a couple of em have a lovely little love nest on the outer.yukkkkkkkk :eek:

Our state prison has a big problem with Female Guards having relations with the male inmates. Even our county jail has had some instances with female detention officers and inmate laborer's. It is not uncommon. Pretty sick in my mind, but I guess some people are just that desperate.... :confused:

I did not believe that this was so prevelent in our prison system. My buddy just started working for the NJ Dept. of Corrections and mentioned to me that a number of male officers who are working in an all womans prison are being fired left and right..These women are becoming pregnant by the damn officers??? How the hell do you get away with that? I thought these facilities are well equipped with cameras and other officers??

Cameras cannot cover every inch of a facility. Most only have camers in halls or day rooms. Very few facilities actually have cameras in every cell. And even if they did, it's hard to keep track of every one. I could see somone getting away with it for awhile, but you know the inmate is not going to keep there mouths shut about it. They now have bragging rights that they are sleeping with a guard. It's hard to underastand why people do it though. I personally go to work to WORK, I guess some people have other intentions. You could'nt pay me enough to ever even consider sleeping with an inmate.

I arrested an officer assigned to the morgue having sex with the women stiffs. How sick is that. Throw away a whole career and she ain't even hot.

The other thing that gets me is that even if they are sick enough to have sex with an inmate... they pick a child murderer!!

No pun intended eh!!! It really is sad to remember that there are people so desparate!

Darkwulfe...... I think the potential for danger is much more serious when its a female officer involved with a male inmate. The ability to overpower alone, not withstanding the emotional factors. In both cases the potential for blackmail is scary.
