Wow, the system around here can get the inmate up to 30 days close confinement with no privledges... they can also take money from them. If they threaten or assault staff then the police are called to lay charges. Depending on the judge they can get a good sentence..... I think I read where there was 4 or 6 months given to an inmate that spit on an officer. (which is pretty good here!!!)

Its also in the Criminal Code of Canada that if more then 12 inmates are involved in a riot and fail to stop after being ordered to do so by the Superintendent/Warden then they can get sentenced to life!!! (Not that it would ever happen, but its on the books!!!)

Due to the crowding conditions here everyone is receiving 2 days credit for each day served, Working Inmates (Trust'ys) receive 3 for 1.

For rules violations, punishments range from 7 to 29 days without priveledges, depending upon the severity. The punishments can also take away any "good time" they have earned if the offense is severe enough, or the Inmate is a chronic offender. They can also be assessed probation for the same length of the "restriction", but ANY infraction of the rules results in the sentence being implemented in full force for the full term, with no appeal, no recourse. (We like giving probation, because only about half make it successfully ;) )

During Disciplinary Hearings, the board (consisting of one Sgt and three Officers) reads the report written by the Officer, then listens to what the accused Inmate has to say. They then make a decision on what, if any punishment is deserved.

Due to the high turnover we have had recently, the majority of the officers that write incident reports don't have much experience in writing reports. Consequently, a LOT of disciplinary hearings result in less-than-satisfactory results for the Officers involved, because the allegations are not supported in the reports.

We usually end up having hearings 3 days per week, anywhere from 1 to 4 hearings each day.

The youngsters just don't learn how to play nice with others very easily.

Spit or throw fecal matter or bodily fluid on an officer in Pennsylvania and you are looking at 3-5 years added onto your sentence. We charge all inmates for any criminal actions while they are at our facility. This is in addition to any "hole" time they may receive for breaking institutional rules. If you ever assualt staff while at our facility you can kiss any and all privilges you received in general population good bye! You will be classified as Adminsitrative Segregation for the remainder of your stay with us. This means you stay in the hole with no commissary,TV, extra clothes, books, magazines, newspapers etc... In fact A/S in our facility is really no different then D/S with the exception that A/S get a 15min. shower daily, 15min. phone call daily and 2 hrs of outdoor rec locked in a 5x10 dog cage in the outside rec. D/S inmates only receive showers M-F and no phone calls and only 1hr. of rec M-F. Staff assaults in our facility is less then 1%. Staff Assaults that do happen are usually always committed by mentally unstable people on our "Nut wing".

Peace!

Tac, are you in a government run facility or privately run?
Any of you still have the "special diet" of bean cake 3 times a day?

I work for County Government. We have what is called "foodloaf" for those inmates who like to throw things or spit. It consists of everything in a regular meal, put in a blender with flour and baked into a loaf. It looks and tastes horrible. Anybody every see fish loaf?? or Spaghetti loaf?? Not at all edible and most do not eat. They are placed on this for 7days and then re-evaluated.

Peace!
