Don't this drive you crazy!!!
We have an inmate in our jail, now keep in mind he IS a regular. Since I've been there we've sent him to prison two times and he's been in jail more than he's been out. Well, the other day he got his probation violated for failing a drug test (+ for cocaine/crack). Well, he came in trying to tell me that he had taken some Tylenol cold is the reason he failed it. I looked at him and said, "wow, Tylenol cold shows up as crack? I'm never taking that stuff!" ;) So anyway, you expect a drug addict to act this way, right? But here's the part that just kills me. His "mommy" called about 10 times before we even got him booked in saying how her son was being held and he wasn't guilty of anything. So I tell her, Mam (I use the term loosely) you don failed a drug test at the probation office. So she says oh no, he's been sick and taking some cold medicine. So I say, Mam...cold medicine doesn't show up as crack! So she starts hollaring at me to tell her son to call her. My reply (I don't like to be hollared at) is I am sorry, we can not deliver messages unless it is a life threatening emergency
:p ! So she rants and raves and even comes down there and camps out in our lobby being sure to tell everyone she sees how those "mean ole cops" are holding her son and there's no telling WHAT their doing to him. I wish she would have said that to me. I would have told her, lady..I would get more satisfaction out of beating you down!! I mean, the guy's 30 yo it's time to cut those apron strings. I think SHE is the one the judge should put in jail, if she would ever make her son stand on his own two feet, he might grow up and do something with hisself.

I hear you shorty. Those types didn't bother me much. The ones that REALLY bothered me, were the wives/girlfriends of the inmates that would bring their little kids to see daddy in jail.

Ah, yes, the "my sweet little Johnny/Janie is being mistreated" calls.

Gotta love 'em

What's just as good is a call we got today: boyfriend calls to see if girlfriend can bemoved to a different cell, so he can bring her kids to see her before he goes to work. (Visiting time is 30 minutes earlier).

Or how about the classic: Guy in jail goes to his scheduled visit, thinking his girlfriend will be there. Imagine his surprise when he not only finds his girlfriend waiting to visit, but his wife, also

We have arrested quite a few for fighting in the visiting rooms.

BTW, our visiting rooms are set up where the inmate goes into a room and talks to his visitors via phone.

JKT, I hear you man. Thank God I don't have to work visiting days anymore. BTW, our visiting booths are set up via phones also. The inmates have no contact with the visitors.
Here's another one for you. (Tobacco is prohibited in our jail) Someone will bring an inmate a package of personal hygiene items. We will be searching it (we do this in front of the person that brought it) and low and behold....their is a bag of Buglar tobacco in each shoe or hid strategically inside of something. The visitor says Ohhhhh, I DIDN'T know that was in there! Yeah lady, I find Buglar in Nike's everytime I but them!!!!!!Mam, your under arrest for promoting prison contraband. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! You can't do this to me. I didn't know, I am dropping it off for a FRIEND. So then I say, hey call your friend and have them post your bond! :D

Heh, heh, heh I love it!!!!!

When working with the mail, we find all sorts of things. From porn (prohibited), to tobacco (also prohibited), to drugs. We wear glove to process the mail, not due to any possible bio-contaminant, but due to all the "other" things that are put on letters. Lipstick, etc....

We also do not accept packages for inmates, or any books (other than religious) from anyone but publishers. It's amazing how many people think B&N and Amazon.com are publishers

On the packages: people are always trying to mail in shoes, which, if the inmate already has them, they can take to the Pen with them.

Since we stamp ALL packages "Return to Sender", they have taken to NOT putting a return address on them, thinking we will put them in the inmate's property, where the inmate can access them.

Can you say "dead letter"??? :D

We have had numerous folks come down and try to say we "stole" their shoes. When we ask them how they were addressed, they usually relpy that they were addressed to the inmate.

"Was there a return address?"

"Uhh, no."

"Well then, you will need to contact the US Post Office to find out what they do with dead letters, or packages without return addresses"

"But I paid $$$$$ (insert exorbatant dollar amount) for those shoes"

"I'm sorry, sir/maam, we don't accept packages for inmates."

*********

In part of our facility, the visitors actually have to go into a secure area, so ID's are checked and they have to sign in before they can enter.

One of our Sergeants LOVES to check warrants on them.

He averages 3 or 4 arrests per month. :D

Yeah, our visitors have to have an ID also.
I wish we didn't accept packages. I don't get it, the admin is always pushing for inmate's to order store because it brings in money for the jail. Well, the inmate can order anything off of our store list that they could possibly need ranging from paper, stamps, deodorant, T-shirts and boxers. Well, the way I see it, if the family can go to Wal-Mart and buy the crap, they could put the money on the inmate's books and let them order what they need off store call. Ohh, but that might make the public angry and cost a vote at election time. When is it going to click with these yahoos that most of them can't vote anyway! Half of everybody I see come in has been in jail before....can you say voting rights revoked? Ahhhg, makes me sick! Sorry for the little rant and rave there! :D
